Director, Software Engineering – Millennium Space Systems

Position Responsibilities

  • Engineering Communication & Strategic Alignment
    • Communicate overall company happenings and provide context to get ahead of swirl.
    • Explain situations in context of the employee, the team, and Millennium.
    • Provide rationale and background for high‑level decisions.
    • Set the technical direction and standards for engineering teams.
    • Establish and maintain the standardization of project management tools to drive commonality in how we implement our design (e.g., IMS and WBS templates).
    • Establish Objectives and KPIs that align with company goals and measure engineering performance across the organization.
    • Implement organizational initiatives and corrective actions to meet and improve performance targets.
  • Program Execution & Technical Oversight
    • Coordinate risk management across teams; prioritize and elevate critical risks.
    • Oversee program‑level schedules, ensure resource balancing, and approve staffing plans.
    • Review and approve proposal labor estimates and technical baselines; manage bid efforts.
    • Manage communication with program directors and PMs regarding technical work products and performance and communicate impacts due to corporate prioritization.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration
    • Collaborate across teams to enforce commonality of tools, analysis, processes, and standards.
    • Partner closely with Quality and Safety teams to ensure risk posture is well understood and standards are up to date.
    • Work closely with Manufacturing leadership to provide support in designing for manufacturability and resolving complex non‑conformance during all working shifts.
    • Assist Manufacturing team to scale design across program portfolios and establish processes and standards.
    • Coordinate with Program Management to meet execution milestones and address blockers.
  • Process Improvement & Operational Efficiency
    • Identify cross‑team relationships and help set priorities on what ETLs recommend.
    • Establish and maintain interview processes.
    • Approve tools/software for efficient use across engineering teams and manage associated costs.
    • Manage OH budget across engineering teams (managers, meetings, software, training, tools & equipment), including approval of software related to efficient use.
  • Talent Development & Leadership
    • Mentor and conduct performance reviews for Front Line Managers and other direct reports; hold regular 1:1 meetings.
    • Provide formal feedback and raise requests per company guidelines.
    • Identify talent for Technical Fellow positions and career growth paths.
    • Sponsor cross‑team initiatives to drive innovation and support transformational technologies.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum 14 years of experience as an engineering professional, with experience in functional or project management in the aerospace‑defense industry.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field with focus on software development.
  • 7+ years of experience in C and C++ programming.
  • 5+ years of experience with Linux in an embedded environment and/or bare‑metal C on a microcontroller.
  • 5+ years serving as or currently serving as a Project Lead or functional manager in spacecraft development.
  • Knowledge of satellite systems and components.
  • Demonstrated ability in flight software design and testing of spacecraft.
  • Approval to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance (Top Secret) and U.S. citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting sense‑making of multifaceted challenges using data.
  • 5+ years of project management experience.
  • 5+ years of experience crafting and developing strategy plans.

Pay & Benefits

Competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
Summary Pay Range: Level L: $165,750 – $243,750.
