Director of Chaplaincy Services
Position Summary At Stony Brook Medicine, the Director of Chaplaincy is a vital member of our team, responsible for leading, planning, organizing, and managing Chaplaincy Services to meet the spiritual and religious needs of patients, families, staff, and the community. This role ensures timely, compassionate, and culturally sensitive spiritual care aligned with the hospital’s mission, ICARE values, and strategic goals.
Duties of a Director of Chaplaincy
Develop, plan and implement policies and procedures for chaplaincy care.
Oversee departmental budget, staffing, and resource management.
Recruit, orient, educate, supervise, and evaluate chaplaincy staff, interns, and volunteers.
Align chaplaincy services with hospital strategic initiatives and quality goals.
Provide spiritual care to patients, families, and staff during crises, end-of-life situations, and routine care.
Participate in on-call rotation for emergency spiritual support.
Ensure timely response to chaplaincy requests.
Manage chaplaincy orientation and education for organization and liaise with the religious community.
Serve on hospital committees (e.g., Ethics, Schwartz Rounds).
Collaborate with leadership to implement Patient and Family Centered Care practices.
Foster collaborative relationships with other departments to support a team approach.
Ensure chaplaincy documentation meets regulatory standards.
Monitor and report quality metrics for spiritual care services.
Maintain administrative procedures in accordance with organizational policies.
Oversee religious activities and programs, including worship services and spiritual counseling.
Demonstrate ICARE values in all interactions.
Participate in programs and professional development activities.
Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree from an accredited school of theology or divinity (ATS).
Ecclesiastical endorsement from official endorsing agency of faith tradition (maintained throughout employment).
Minimum of 2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).
Certification with APC, NACC, NAJC, or equivalent.
At least 3 years of experience in hospital or healthcare chaplaincy with leadership responsibilities.
Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work across diverse faith traditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Specialized training in Palliative Care, Ethics, or Hospice.
Experience with EMR documentation and quality improvement processes.

Anticipated Pay Range The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $104,040 - $124,848 per year.
The above salary range represents SBUH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.
Some positions offer annual supplemental pay such as:
Location pay for UUP full-time positions ($4,000)
