Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership and Vision – Lead the advancement of the AASL strategic plan, monitor trends, and serve as an advocate for school librarians.
  • Representation, Advocacy, and Collaboration – Represent AASL within ALA, strengthen partnerships with educators, professional organizations, policymakers, and act as a spokesperson at meetings and conferences.
  • Management and Operational Oversight – Ensure policy adherence, oversee projects and initiatives, and manage the operating budget.
  • Financial and Organizational Stewardship – Provide strategic financial leadership for a $1+ million budget, plan the biennial AASL National Conference (~$500,000), and identify revenue‑generating opportunities.
  • Board and Governance Support – Prepare reports, communicate with Board officers, and coordinate volunteer leadership across ALA and partner organizations.

Other Information

This is a full‑time position based in Chicago. A hybrid schedule is available; local telecommuting is allowed but no remote positions outside the Chicago sites.

All employees must be fully vaccinated per CDC guidelines. Background check and proof of work eligibility are required.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary range is negotiable from $130,000 based on relevant experience. Benefits include flexible schedules, medical and dental coverage, generous paid vacation, retirement annuity, a 35‑hour work week, and eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
