The Director of Nursing and Clinical Operations provides strategic and operational leadership for neurosurgical clinical services. This role oversees all aspects of nursing care delivery, ensuring high standards of patient safety, quality, and compliance. The Director manages and mentors the nursing team, coordinates interdisciplinary workflows, and optimizes clinical processes to support exceptional patient outcomes. Additionally, this position serves as the lead Nurse Practitioner (NP), maintaining an active clinical practice and managing a panel of patients. The Director collaborates closely with physicians, department leadership, and other stakeholders to drive efficiency, innovation, and excellence in neurosurgical care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Directs and oversees neurosurgical clinical operations to ensure efficiency and quality of care.
  • Leads and manages the nursing team, including recruitment, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Serves as the lead Nurse Practitioner (NP) while maintaining an active patient panel.
  • Develops and implements clinical protocols, workflows, and best practices for patient safety and compliance.
  • Collaborates with physicians, administrators, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize care delivery.
  • Monitors and analyzes clinical performance metrics; drive continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ensures adherence to regulatory standards, accreditation requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Mentors and supports nursing and advanced practice staff in professional development and clinical excellence.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Master of Science degree with completion of a Nurse Practitioner program. Registered and currently recorded with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland. Certified in area of specialty
  • DEA and CDS eligible
  • CPR required
  • BLS required
  • ACLS and/or other relevant certifications as required by the department
  • A minimum of one year experience as a Registered Nurse is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in area of specialty
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to interact with patient families, departmental units, medical and nursing staff on all essential matters
  • Maintains updated mandatory training
  • Updates immunizations as recommended per practice area

Total Rewards

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
