Director of Operations – Commercial Roofing
Location: Orange County, CA
Compensation: $150,000–$200,000 base salary + performance-based bonuses
Position Overview
A well-established commercial roofing contractor with over 30 years of proven success is seeking an experienced Director of Operations to lead and optimize field operations across Southern California. This role is responsible for overseeing production, safety, quality, staffing, and continuous improvement for complex commercial roofing projects. The ideal candidate brings strong operational leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to partner closely with sales, ownership, and field leadership to drive executional excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Production Planning & Execution
Build and manage production schedules across all active projects.
Design the operational “architecture” for complex and large-scale jobs, ensuring efficient execution from start to finish.
Provide recommendations on superintendent and foreman staffing for each project.
Maintain accountability for quality control and job completion standards.
Conduct periodic on-site inspections for larger or higher-risk projects.
Partner with the sales team during pre-construction on complex bids to identify potential risks, errors, and logistical considerations.
Oversee final inspections and address any issues raised by manufacturers or customers.
Field Leadership & Training
Lead and develop a culture of continuous improvement across all field operations.
Design and implement training programs that enhance technical skills, leadership development, and overall performance of field staff.
Serve as a resource to superintendents and foremen when challenges arise in the field.
Subcontractor & Vendor Management
Lead subcontractor negotiations and clearly define scopes of work and responsibilities.
Collaborate with sales and operations to prepare subcontractor scopes and production directives for each project.
Evaluate subcontractor performance and make recommendations to ownership on selection and long-term partnerships.
Safety & Compliance
Lead job-site safety planning and execution across all projects.
Regularly audit safety practices and procedures to ensure compliance.
Ensure adherence to all industry regulations, safety standards, and internal policies.
Oversee and lead company-wide safety training initiatives.
Technical Investigation & Problem Resolution
Lead leak investigations and technical analysis related to prior work.
Analyze underperforming or “problem” jobs to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
Develop forward-looking processes to prevent repeat issues and improve future job performance.
Operational Improvement & Innovation
Stay current on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies.
Recommend and implement improvements to job execution, workflows, and operational efficiency.
Track and evaluate new roofing technologies, systems, and methods for potential adoption.
