This is a seasonal position for the months of June through August 2023. Working at the Y, you will create exciting and impactful experiences for campers, build connections with peers and Y professionals, expand your leadership skills, and have fun. Summer camp at the Y offers adventure, friends, and fun, and is more than a job. Ensure all campers have a fun, enriching, and safe experience Assist with planning and implement the Y camp program in accordance with the goals and policies of the Y and the camp curriculum Assist in providing leadership to camp counselors, including training and daily supervision Mentor camp staff Ensure daily schedule of activities is carried out for all groups of campers Assist in conducting weekly team meetings and provide performance feedback on a daily basis Ensure that all counselors have daily schedule and the appropriate supplies and resources to deliver a quality program Be responsible for camper safety and security Ensure adherence to the policies of the Y Motivate, energize and encourage counselors to deliver outstanding programming and customer service daily Participate in staff trainings and meetings as required What you need to be an Assistant Camp Director
Be able to work from the week before camp begins for training to the end of the final week of the season High school graduate 21 years of age Willing to participate in and obtain CPR and First Aid Certification Clear the local jurisdiction requirements for criminal background and/or fingerprinting Meet the county/state licensing requirements At least two summers of experience in day camp, recreation, physical education, teaching, or working with school age children Prior experience assisting supervising staff Work well with and in groups Able to effectively communicate with children and parents Understand and be committed to working with diverse population and to YMCA character development Physical requirements
Must be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time Must be physically active to play games and sports with the children Must be able to pick-up at least 35 pounds Must have visual acuity to observe all children We offer the following benefits

Assists the Camp Director with administrative or supervisory duties Substitutes for counselors, or oversees a group of campers in addition to other duties Assist the Camp Director to ensure staff to child ratios, lesson plans and daily schedules are in place and being followed Supervisory responsibilities include guiding, training, or mentoring other employees (no direct supervision) Directly responsible for supervising non-exempt, clerical, or office administration personnel Directly responsible for supervising exempt, professional, or technical employees Directly responsible for supervising supervisory/managerial employees Working Conditions / Other Details
Job title reports to Camp Director; no direct reports are listed for this position Ensures safety procedures are in place for the class being taught Assists with planning, supervising and implementing the program in accordance with YMCA goals and the day camp curriculum Maintains daily schedules and ensures staff carry out activities for their group Communicates with parents regarding their children’s experience Participates in post-camp evaluation and monitors hourly head counts All camp staff attend a minimum of 20 hours of training prior to the start of summer camp Education, Certification, Skills, and Experience
High school diploma Must be 21 years of age Current CPR and First Aid Certification Documentation of physical examination and TB skin test Clear the local jurisdiction requirements for criminal background and/or fingerprinting Must meet the county/state licensing requirements At least two summers of experience as a Counselor Must understand and be committed to working with diverse population and YMCA character development Complete Training for: Facility Orientation, Child Care Policy/Prevention of child abuse, Staff/Parent Handbook, Emergency Procedures * The YMCA requires that all camp staff attend a minimum of 20 hours of training prior to the start of summer camp and that it be documented in personnel files.
