Overview
At Aztec, our goal is to add privacy to Ethereum. In the current public blockchain paradigm, users and entities unknowingly broadcast data in the public, compromising privacy and security to get trustlessness. Not only are unencrypted blockchains inherently privacy-exposing, they require significant redundancy to compute and verify the legitimacy of transactions. Implementing scalable encryption in a public blockchain paradigm requires cutting-edge math and engineering. Thankfully, our team of scientists and engineers invented Plonk, the industry-standard zkSNARK, and Noir, the universal language of zero knowledge. Now, we’re building a first of its kind Layer 2 with private smart contracts. This requires new cryptographic primitives, a zero-knowledge DSL for writing contracts, a privacy-friendly execution environment, a carefully designed set of circuits that prove the validity of the chain to L1, a decentralized block-building and proving mechanism, and a top-tier user and developer experience. And it’s now time to bring it to market. We’ve raised $125 million from industry-leading investors including a16z crypto, Paradigm, Variant, Consensys, and a_capital, and we’re growing quickly.
Role focus
Aztec Labs is a UK headquartered software development company that (1) helped develop the Aztec Network, the first open-source, permissionless, decentralised and programmable privacy Layer 2 on Ethereum and (2) is currently focused on developing groundbreaking privacy apps on Aztec.
We are looking for someone to serve as senior legal counsel. You will work closely with our General Counsel to identify and navigate potential legal and regulatory challenges, and develop internal processes across product, business development, finance, human resources, operations, and compliance. This role will be based out of either London, UK or New York, US.
Your responsibilities will include:
Draft and negotiate all types of varied legal contracts, including code audit review agreements, advisor engagement agreements, and other legal documents
Assist in developing and maintaining policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry best practices
Help build and improve internal contract templates and manage the company’s legal documentation database
Collaborating with cross-functional partners on the legal implications across the company’s strategy, product development, financial matters, commercial partnerships, corporate matters, internal policies, compliance, IP, negotiations and more
Manage the company’s internal corporate affairs and filings, including managing the board process and prepare resolutions / minutes and ensure all relevant filings are completed in a timely manner
Manage the legal aspects of company’s share option / token pool strategy
Horizon scanning of regulatory developments
Conduct legal research and analysis and attend policy meeting updates to stay abreast of regulatory developments and other legal / policy trends
Assist in drafting regulatory responses to consultations with a view to shaping policy
Work closely with the operations team and manage relationships with external counsel, policy groups as well as the broader Aztec ecosystem
Qualifications
JD, LLB or equivalent and 5+ years of UK or US qualified legal experience in a global law firm or substantial in-house, preferably in crypto, technology, or fintech
Strong knowledge of regulatory and legal frameworks relevant to web3 including US and global financial market regulations, securities laws, and IP and open-source development law
Proven problem-solving, communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, remote and global team
Deep understanding of, or passion for, crypto and privacy
