Overview

The Museum of Modern Art is accepting applications for a Manager, Public Engagement in the Learning and Engagement department. The Manager, Public Engagement advances adult programs that foster new ideas and connections through the art of our time, providing platforms to catalyze meaningful experiences with art. The Manager conceives, co-conceives, and produces programs such as artmaking and writing, conversations, facilitated discussions, discursive programs, workshops, and performances, with a focus on how art and artists can effect individual and social transformation. The Manager will guide staff, including Associate and Assistant Educators, as part of a team to design, coordinate, implement, and facilitate adult programs that provide impactful experiences, attract new audiences, and engender critical conversations. The Manager reports to and collaborates with the Director, Public Engagement to identify and manage potential community partnerships that align with this work, including strengthening academic partnerships with colleges and universities in the New York area.

Reports to: Director, Public Engagement. Supervises: Associate Educators, Assistant Educators, Studio Museum Fellow. Salary range: Minimum of $90,000 to maximum of $105,000 per annum.

Responsibilities

With the Director, Public Engagement, develop and refine a strategic framework for the delivery of public programs at the Museum.

Lead the conceptualization, design, development, and implementation of an extensive portfolio of programs for adult visitors and intergenerational audiences (lectures, talks, art/object making, artist programs, writing and reading groups), ensuring high quality, creativity, inclusiveness, and accessibility.

Collaborate with curators, marketing and communications, and visitor experience to achieve divisional goals and organizational priorities.

Directly supervise Public Engagement staff (Associate Educator, Assistant Educator, Studio Museum Fellow); participate in recruitment, provide training and development, ensure policy and union compliance, manage discipline as needed, conduct annual performance reviews.

Foster an ambitious, proactive team culture to improve MoMA’s public programming and engagement strategies.

Navigate a fast-paced programming environment to support audiences, artists, and staff.

Develop and cultivate partnerships with higher education institutions, creative communities, and community partners to advance collaborative programs.

Monitor and evaluate MoMA adult programs, updating and refining offerings based on results.

Analyze audience research and visitor demographics to better serve the MoMA community.

Ensure operational excellence in processes and systems, establishing best practices and seamless experiences for partner departments and audiences; regularly evaluate processes to meet changing needs.

Serve as a member of the Education senior leadership team, contributing to cross-divisional engagement and decision-making; build collaborative relationships with peers.

Provide monthly reports and statistics; support grant applications and advancement initiatives; participate in institutional planning/initiatives.

Create budgets, track expenses, and oversee ongoing financial operations and reporting in line with budgetary guidelines.

Write copy for brochures and website promotions; present and lead adult programs as needed, including weekends and evenings.

Maintain contact with the broader network of museum professionals through conferences, professional networks, and organizations.

Perform other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in art history, art education, museum studies or fine/studio arts. Strong knowledge of art history, museum teaching, and object interpretation strategies.

Eight+ years of museum experience, including three+ years in a leadership role; understanding of the role of education in a museum and best practices in museum education.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to collaborate with diverse audiences including staff, educators, funders, sponsors, members, and the public.

Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and learner-centered interpretation strategies.

Experience supervising personnel, program and budget development, project management, and meeting deadlines.

Ability to work effectively in a team and across the organization.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Must be available to work evenings and weekends as required.
