Overview The San Francisco Examiner, The City’s oldest locally owned newspaper, is seeking an experienced managing editor with a deep knowledge of San Francisco to drive the Examiner’s daily digital news and print offerings and help tell the stories that matter most to our readers.

The managing editor will play a vital role in overseeing and shaping the paper's breaking and daily news and ensuring the delivery of accurate, compelling, and must-read coverage.

The managing editor should have impeccable news judgment and a proven track record of editing deadline-intensive copy while ensuring our coverage captures the complex topics facing San Francisco with clarity, nuance and authority. This team member will play an integral role in the day-to-day operations of the newsroom, reporter management, paper production, and digital news strategy.

Requirements / Qualifications

10+ years of copy-editing experience across a variety of story formats and subjects under intense deadline pressure, especially at a daily digital news outlet

Excellent team management and leadership skills

A deep understanding of San Francisco and a desire to tell the stories no one else is

Experience working with reporters on story selection and framing stories to have the most impact

Ability to multitask on deadline, balancing speed and accuracy of stories

Intimate knowledge of AP style, content management systems, SEO and other digital publishing fundamentals

Strong communication skills to coordinate with colleagues working in the newsroom and in the field

Desire to work in a demanding and fast-paced environment

Adaptability and innovative approach to a changing industry

Experience writing a daily newsletter is a plus

Experienced headline writer is a plus

Salary range: $100,000 - $125,000
