Overview
Liberty’s US Onshore Energy Underwriting team delivers market-leading risk transfer solutions to domestic energy clients through both retail and wholesale broker channels. We partner closely with risk engineers to provide tailored coverage across the energy sector, including Oil & Gas (Downstream), Petrochemical, Chemical, Biofuels, and Power Generation (Natural Gas and Renewables). As a Senior Underwriter, you will be responsible for underwriting first-party energy property risks in alignment with our business plan and within your delegated authority. You’ll play a key role in shaping our portfolio, building broker relationships, and collaborating across functions to deliver high-quality solutions to our clients.
Responsibilities
Strategic Planning & Portfolio Management
Contribute to the development and execution of the annual business plan, ensuring alignment with risk appetite and strategic goals.
Leverage data, tools, and insights to manage portfolio performance and drive profitable growth.
Champion innovation by proposing new ideas and underwriting approaches.
Underwriting & Delivery
Underwrite complex energy property risks, negotiating terms, conditions, and pricing in accordance with underwriting guidelines and authority.
Maintain strong relationships with brokers, reinsurers, and industry partners to support business development and retention.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Risk Engineering, Claims, Actuarial, Finance, and Operations to deliver integrated solutions.
Ensure contract certainty and timely, accurate documentation of underwriting decisions and exposures.
Compliance & Governance
Adhere to internal underwriting standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices to mitigate risk and ensure compliance.
Apply reinsurance strategies effectively to support portfolio management and risk transfer.
Demonstrate a proactive approach to regulatory and internal compliance responsibilities.
Qualifications Advanced-level knowledge of insurance products/coverage, underwriting, pricing, risk selection, market segments and marketplace; insurance finance and actuarial concepts; loss control/risk engineering; marketing techniques, regulatory environment and reinsurance; advanced-level knowledge of territory management.
Ability to apply underwriting/appetite, tools, systems, and resources to achieve goals, solve complex problems, establish and build healthy working relationships, lead mentoring relationships, and negotiate, as normally acquired and a related bachelor’s degree, seven to ten years of relevant experience preferred; CPCU or professional insurance designation strongly preferred.

The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
