Overview
The University seeks a full-time Assistant Professor of Band (tenure track) and Director of Bands. Responsibilities include conducting wind ensembles, leading the band program (concert and athletic bands), and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting, large ensemble literature, rehearsal methodology, and related areas. The successful candidate will recruit and retain students, support student research and creative activity, and contribute to a collaborative faculty environment. Applicants should have extensive experience in conducting wind ensembles, strong communication and organizational skills, and the ability to teach effectively in varied contexts.
Job Description
Conduct the UCO Wind Symphony and additional ensembles as appropriate.
Lead the UCO band program including concert and athletic bands.
Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting, large ensemble literature, rehearsal methodology, and related areas.
Recruit and retain students and contribute to student research and creative activity.
Collaborate with a diverse faculty to support program goals.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Extensive performance and conducting experience in bands and wind ensembles.
Ability to teach courses related to training conductors (e.g., applied conducting, ensemble rehearsal methodology, large ensemble literature, score reading).
Ability to lead the band program at UCO, coordinating all bands and wind ensembles.
Ability to teach online, face-to-face, and hybrid courses.
Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate students effectively.
Ability to work within a collaborative faculty environment and communicate effectively in oral and written form.
Ability to recruit and retain students.
Other related duties as assigned.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Additional area(s) of musical expertise (e.g., applied low brass or other instrument, aural skills, theory, music education, or related cognates).
Required Education And Experience
A doctoral degree in music. ABD may be considered.
A strong background in leading bands in an academic setting with successful teaching of conducting courses.
A minimum of 3 years of college teaching experience.
Preferred Education And Experience
5 years of college teaching experience.
Successful secondary-level band instruction and leadership.
