Job Responsibilities The Therapeutic Area Segment Lead – provides strategic, scientific, and operational leadership for a defined segment within the Tx Area / sub areas. This role ensures excellence in project delivery, strengthens scientific and operational rigor, and drives segment-level growth and capability development in alignment with the broader Tx Area strategy.

As a senior leader within Global Project Management, the Segment Lead partners closely with cross-functional teams, senior operational leaders, and client executives to ensure high-quality delivery, proactive risk management, and strong client satisfaction. This role serves as a key scientific and operational advisor to project teams, supports pre-award activities, and advances modernization initiatives within the segment.

The success of this role is measured through delivery outcomes, client partnership strength, capability evolution, segment growth, and leadership impact.

Pre-Award Strategy & Scientific Leadership

Provide strategic and scientific oversight for proposals, RFIs, bid defenses, and therapeutic positioning within the assigned segment.

Serve as Scientific Director or senior consultant when required, contributing clinical, regulatory, and therapeutic expertise.

Guide development of clinical strategies, protocols, investigator brochures, and medical/clinical reports in partnership with Medical Writing and Medical Affairs.

Coordinate input from external experts and advisors to strengthen segment credibility and competitive positioning.

Support development of TCOE-based scientific tools, SOPs, training modules, and delivery frameworks specific to the assigned segment.

Executive Client Engagement & Business Development

Serve as the senior operational and scientific point of contact for strategic clients within the segment.

Develop and execute client engagement plans that strengthen relationships and expand business opportunities.

Participate in high-value proposal strategies, steering committees, and executive governance discussions.

Present Syneos Health’s capabilities, thought leadership, and differentiators to clients and at scientific/industry forums.

Partner with BD to identify and secure new business in targeted regions (e.g., expanding vaccines in EU/APAC, global ID programs, respiratory innovation). Outcomes: Strengthened client relationships, Reduced escalations, Expanded segment footprint, Increased revenue from repeat and new business.

Strategic Delivery Oversight

Oversee delivery performance across the assigned segment’s portfolio.

Lead governance frameworks to ensure risk mitigation, quality oversight, and delivery predictability.

Use operational analytics to anticipate issues, optimize delivery strategies, and drive continuous improvement.

Partner with the SVP TA Head to align segment delivery practices with broader General Medicine modernization initiatives (e.g., CGT/MD&D capability uplift, TCOE enhancements, conference strategy).

Outcomes: Improved delivery KPIs, Strong risk mitigation, High-quality execution, Portfolio performance aligned with TA and corporate goals.

Financial Leadership Outcomes: Consistent financial performance, Accurate forecasts, Improved margin and resource efficiency.

Organizational Leadership & Talent Development Outcomes: High engagement and retention, Leadership pipeline strength, Improved team capability and cohesion.

Quality, Compliance & Operational Excellence Outcomes: Higher audit readiness, Reduced quality risks, More consistent operational excellence.

Strategic Initiatives & Capability Development

Drive strategic initiatives within the segment, such as:

Expansion of vaccine capabilities outside the U.S.

Strengthening of CGT and MD&D central capabilities

Enhancing ID/respiratory scientific and operational depth

Improving GTM collateral and conference strategy in alignment with TCOEs

Provide thought leadership to influence broader TA strategies and corporate objectives.

Outcomes: Stronger segment positioning, Capability modernization, Measurable contributions to TA growth targets.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Nursing, or related discipline required; advanced degree preferred.

15+ years of clinical research, clinical operations, or project management experience in CRO, biotech, or pharmaceutical environments.

Proven expertise within one or more Tx Area therapeutic segments.

Demonstrated experience leading complex global clinical programs and senior project teams.

Strong knowledge of FDA regulations, ICH/GCP guidelines, and global drug development standards.

Exceptional executive communication, client relationship management, and stakeholder influence skills.

Strong financial and strategic acumen with experience overseeing portfolio economics.

Demonstrated track record of driving innovation, operational improvement, and organizational leadership.

Ability to travel up to ~25–30%

Salary Range $204,600.00 - $378,600.00
