The Opportunity

In this full-time, on-site leadership role based in Newton, Massachusetts, the Clinical Director serves as a core member of the interdisciplinary leadership team. This position provides clinical oversight, supervision, and strategic direction for Asteroid Health’s mental health services, including Psychiatric Day Treatment, Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP), and outpatient care. The Clinical Director partners closely with the Program Director and administrative leadership to ensure clinical quality, regulatory compliance, staff development, and continuous quality improvement across all levels of care.

What You Will Do at Asteroid Health

  • Provide overall leadership and management of clinical programming, ensuring services align with evidence-based practices, state regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Supervise all clinical staff activities, including group facilitation, individual therapy, documentation, treatment planning, and charting, to maintain the highest standards of care and clinical effectiveness.
  • Serve as the clinical supervisor for counselors, facilitating weekly or biweekly individual and group supervision using reflective, trauma-informed supervision practices, and maintaining required supervision documentation.
  • Provide direct clinical services to clients in individual and group settings as needed to support program operations and clinical continuity.
  • Collaborate with contracted billing partners and utilization review functions to support medical necessity, documentation accuracy, and reimbursement compliance.
  • Partner with Electronic Health Record vendors and internal stakeholders to develop and maintain clinical documentation infrastructure, including assessments, consents, screeners, and reporting tools.
  • Participate in monthly medical records reviews and Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement meetings, and lead clinical performance improvement initiatives as indicated.
  • Assist with readiness activities for state licensing visits, audits, and accreditation surveys.
  • Participate in recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, and retention efforts for clinical staff.
  • Complete annual performance evaluations and provide ongoing performance management in collaboration with Human Resources, ensuring fair, consistent, and compliant practices.
  • Ensure staff credentialing, licensure, and required trainings remain current and compliant with state and organizational standards.
  • Facilitate staff development initiatives and promote continuing professional development.
  • Lead multidisciplinary treatment team meetings and foster collaborative, client-centered care planning.
  • Network with referral partners and community stakeholders to support program growth and continuity of care.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and recovery-oriented workplace culture that supports staff wellbeing, mitigates burnout, and enhances retention.

What You Bring to Asteroid Health

  • Active, unrestricted Massachusetts clinical licensure as one of the following: LICSW, LMHC, LMFT, or Psychologist licensed by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Psychologists. Licensure must be active and in good standing and include independent clinical practice authority.
  • Master’s degree in a behavioral health related field that meets Massachusetts licensure requirements.
  • Minimum of five years of mental health treatment experience, preferably in an outpatient or intensive outpatient setting.
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory or clinical leadership experience in a behavioral health environment.
  • Demonstrated experience providing clinical supervision and leading multidisciplinary treatment teams.
  • Working knowledge of ASAM criteria, co-occurring disorder treatment, and medication-assisted treatment.
  • Strong clinical judgment, assessment skills, and ability to manage complex client presentations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethical practice, trauma-informed care, recovery-oriented systems of care, and staff psychological safety.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records and clinical documentation standards.
  • Ability to analyze clinical and operational data to inform quality improvement and compliance initiatives.

Requirements

  • Ability to work full-time, onsite in Newton, Massachusetts.
  • Active Massachusetts independent clinical licensure in good standing. Acceptable licenses include LICSW, LMHC, LMFT, or Massachusetts-licensed Psychologist.
  • Minimum 5 years of Mental Health Treatment experience required, preferably in an outpatient setting.
  • Minimum 3 years (5+ years preferred) of youth and/or adult population experience required.
  • Minimum 3 years (5+ years preferred) of direct clinical supervisory experience in a behavioral health setting, including responsibility for clinical oversight, performance management, documentation review, and reflective supervision of licensed or license-eligible staff.
  • Knowledge of and ability to maintain compliance with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and Massachusetts behavioral health regulations.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead with professionalism, accountability, and compassion.
