Overview The Assistant Director will provide scientific and administrative support to the operations of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute. This includes the writing and editing of research proposals to obtain external funding for mentoring and training programs, and the administration of such training grants including recruitment, class enrollment, and matching of participants with appropriate laboratories. The Assistant Director will partner with Iowa Neuroscience Institute faculty to contribute to data analysis and to write, edit, and review publications and grant application components. Finally, the Assistant Director will have responsibility for community engagement and event programming.

Responsibilities

Specialized Services/ Application of Research Protocols

Provide scientific, technical, and administrative leadership and expertise in the operations of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute.

Educate, Train and Consult

Assist with mentoring and training programs of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute. May present educational courses or seminars on field of expertise.

Research Proposals/Grants

Write research proposals and grants for various agencies to secure external funding for training, mentoring, and research. Support the development of collaborative teams of investigators for training grants, center grants, and program project grants.

Literature Review/ Data Analysis

Oversee and/or participate in the investigation and critical analysis of literature. Develop new data analysis techniques or methodology. Contribute to the publication records of others; may be listed as an author on manuscripts for publications. Write papers, grants, and other supporting documents.

Service

Engage in scholarly research and educational activities which may include serving on scientific review panels, reviewing papers and proposals, and serving on Ph.D. dissertation committees. May serve in a leadership role in scientific and/or professional societies.

Human Resources/Supervision

May hire, develop, and manage the performance of staff; assure staff is compliant with UI policies and procedures.

Education Requirements

Ph.D. in relevant field or MD required.

Experience Requirements

Ability to review papers and proposals

5 years of productive research experience focusing on topics of broad interest in neuroscience.

Ability to foster an environment in which excellence in research, teaching, and scholarship can flourish.

Experience and interest in developing interdisciplinary training and research programs.

Significant experience and skill in scientific writing and communication.

Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated proficiency in computer software applications.

Desired Qualifications

Record of innovative and effective administrative and fiscal leadership.

Record of excellent interpersonal skills.

Positive interactions with students, staff, and faculty.

Record of high-quality scientific publications as a primary author.

Experience with the writing, editing, and revision of grant applications to NIH, other federal agencies, and/or private foundations.
