About THIS OPPORTUNITY: As our

Director of Engineering , you will thrive in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment—where precision, service excellence, and a relentless eye for detail are non‑negotiable. You’ll be a key leader in our most complex, high‑stakes engineering projects— from design, build, quality, safety, sustainable practices, and continuous improvement—for large‑scale multi‑unit residential plumbing and mechanical systems replacement projects. You will drive design, liaise with clients and vendors, and partner with our estimating, pre‑construction, marketing, and operations teams to meet business goals, ensuring every project meets our high standards.

This

Director of Engineering

requires significant design‑build experience specifically related to Mechanical and Plumbing building systems, demonstrated large‑scale project expertise, and very effective client and stakeholder relationship skills. This role is intended to be a hybrid full‑time exempt position, based at our Alexandria, Virginia office, with some occasional overnight travel, and reports to the Senior Vice President, Pre‑Construction.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: Design/Build Project Delivery

Manage internal and external resources to deliver design‑build projects

Generate schematic level design and project approach for various offerings.

Manage external design resources to ensure quality and scope effectiveness.

Produce and present accurate design documents inn Draft contract exhibits defining project scope and related topics.

Technical and Field Operations Support

Work closely with SageWater pre‑construction and operations staff to fully understand project specific requirements including with vendors, contractors, and regulators.

Manage production of construction documents to be utilized for acquiring permits and assist staff with permit acquisition throughout the United States.

Support Pipe TEST division as needed with regard to technical client traditional consultive engineering tasks and execution.

Address technical questions and support and monitor related ongoing work including on‑site.

Review construction documents to ensure quality and scope including in‑house construction document production as needed.

Manage mechanical and plumbing technical support throughout the company.

Maintain, foster, and develop productive relationships including with co‑workers, other departments, clients, subcontractors, and vendors.

Promote innovation and process improvements across pre‑construction and operations teams

Travel as needed to support project launch, troubleshooting, and technical issues.

Business Development/Sales

Meet regularly with other teams to assist with project pursuits and increase project wins.

Coordinate the creation of new project work based upon service client systems and equipment needs

Work with the Marketing team to develop and/or refine sales and marketing literature and web content

Conduct pre‑award site visits to understand projects scope and develop win strategies

Serve as the main point of contact for clients regarding project updates, service issues, and technical support.

Assist with owner communications including drafting and delivering content.

Provide inputs for our estimating department to create proposals for service contracts and construction projects.

Financial & Strategic Planning

Manage assigned budget, including software and other miscellaneous overhead costs.

Solicit and evaluate proposals from external design partners and manage associated costs.

Analyze operational data to improve efficiency, profitability, and customer service.

Support long‑term planning and growth strategies for the Engineering division.

Accurately monitor and report on the design, construction, schedules, and financial activities in a timely manner

Provide regular updates to executive leadership on engineering performance, project risks, and milestones.

Key Requirements:

B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field

Registered Professional Engineer (minimum one state, NCEES registration preferred)

At least 5 years’ design experience with Mechanical and Plumbing building systems

At least 5 years' experience working for or with mechanical/plumbing contractors

Demonstrated knowledge of relevant building codes, specifically ICC and various energy standards

Leadership experience related to design team environments

Expertise with industry standard drawing software and load calculation/design software

Demonstrated client and vendor relationship management skills

Demonstrated financial and business acumen

Excellent organizational and multi‑tasking skills

A positive “no job is too big or too small” attitude

Proficiency in English, written and spoken, and excellent presentation skills

Proficiency in basic computer skills including with email, internet, Word, and Excel

Must have a personal vehicle suitable for regular local and regional transport

Must be able to travel locally and occasionally overnight nationally

Must be able to regularly lift and carry 25-50 lbs

PREFERRED CANDIDATES

will also have prior trades experience; advanced education in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field; be proficient in Spanish; and/or have prior related military or civil service experience.

Salary Range:

$165,000 - $190,000 annualized base pay based upon experience and qualifications, plus bonus opportunity ranging from 15% to 25% of base salary.
