Must be in good physical condition. Must perform outdoor heavy manual tasks and be able to safely navigate a loaded solo or tandem canoe or a raft on a remote river for 3-4 days at a time with another Recreation River Ranger or potentially alone. Must be able to hike several miles with moderate elevation gain in a remote and rugged backcountry setting. A valid driver's license is required and must be able to drive 3/4 ton, 4x4 trucks while pulling and backing up with attached trailers. Work assignments include tasks performed in all kinds of weather and typically at other than normal working hours or shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays. The duty station during the Smith River float season will be the Camp Baker put-in on the Smith River. Shared housing is provided in a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home at Camp Baker. Administrative duties during the Smith River float season will be performed in a Ranger Station at Camp Baker. Overnight camping with another park ranger or potentially alone during river patrols will be required for 3-4 days at a time. Float season duties involve registering float groups, conducting pre-launch ranger talks, collecting and remitting fees, recording daily use statistics and performing river patrols providing visitors with information and education, enforcing rules and regulations and maintaining boat camps. Assist with preparation and completion of streambank bioengineering projects of boat camp landings and core camping areas. Qualifications
The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in park and or recreation management, archeology, geology, or related fields. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicant Pool Statement: If another department vacancy occurs in this job title within six months, the same applicant pool may be used for the selection. Training Assignment: This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules.
