DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The Managing Editor plans, directs, and manages the development and production for the hard copy and on-line version of the Gila River Indian Newspaper. This position ensures community events are covered with accompanying photographs which includes gathering and collecting newsworthy items pertinent to the Gila River Indian Community. This position oversees newspaper staff, plans the content of the newspaper, and supervises its planning, preparation, advertising, production, and distribution to the Community. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provide supervision and leadership to newspaper staff members, which includes providing and recommending training, coordinating and assigning work; Establish performance measures, goals, objectives and priorities; Evaluate work performance and provide feedback, direction, guidance, and disciplinary actions. Make decisions regarding articles, advertisements, printing, and the composition of layout design within internal deadlines and printing deadlines. Create, proofread, fact-check, and modify editorial content for the Gila River Indian News publications. Assign topics to newspaper staff and collaborate on news stories to facilitate media coverage for the Gila River Indian Community. Manage the social media and web content on the Gila River Indian News web page and editing of online publications; Provide oversight and management of the development of multimedia projects. Coordinate the newspaper advertising and develop rapport with potential and existing advertisers. Maintain individual mail out list and delivery locations for GRIC departments, enterprises, and programs and advertisement management. Create special layout for presentation of information to the Community. Perform other related duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of principles of office management, supervision, and project team management. Knowledge of the Associated Press (AP) Style journalism, advertising, desktop publishing, and layout design. Knowledge of photography concepts, photojournalism, and event coverage. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite with emphasis on photo/video editing and graphic/layout design. Knowledge of solicitation of advertisements and ability to manage multiple deadlines. Ability to create, proofread, fact-check, and modify editorial content. Ability to effectively handle multiple priorities. Ability to effectively plan, supervise and coordinate work of others. Ability to exercise independence and judgment in developing, applying and following policies, procedures and precedents. Ability to research data, create ideas, write copy, and lay out graphic design. Ability to work flexible hours. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officials and the public. Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or closely related field and five (5) years’ experience in public relations, feature writing or print and electronic media which includes two (2) years supervisory experience. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Provide three (3) letters of recommendation. Provide examples of writing ability (i.e., newspaper, magazine, brochure, photographs, etc.). Tribal Operator’s permit can be required
