Cordia Resources by Cherry Bekaert is engaged in a search for a Director of Finance to be the top Financial leader of a growing local, DC based law firm. Person hired will oversee the accounting and finance for a small team in a hybrid work setting (3 days in office) after an introductory 5 days in office, training period. This is a hands on role.
This newly created role demands a CPA who can expertly oversee the accounting and grow
under limited supervision and reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (Administrator) and the Treasurer. The Director of Finance is responsible for the firm’s accounting operations, which include, oversight of daily financial operations, production of financial reports, management reporting, analysis of financial performance, administration of the firm’s accounting system, and overseeing the firm’s cash operating requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversees the daily operations of the accounting department, ensuring that payroll and accounts payable, billing and cash receipt postings are processed accurately in a timely manner.
- Performs and manages month-end and year-end closing of financial system. Ensures financial statements are complete and accurate and supported by subsidiary ledgers/ accounting system details.
- Prepares monthly financial statements and management reporting package. Analyzes variances and reports areas of concern to Management.
- Prepares budgets by establishing schedules, collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data.
- Monitors cash balance and cash requirements. Works with Treasurer to invest cash surpluses, plans for large expenditures and Director distributions.
- Oversees banking relationship and works with firm bankers to ensure firm takes advantage of automation to enhance efficiencies with its operations.
- Presents Financial results to Management and Directors explaining variances and opportunities for increased profitability.
- Participates in strategic planning for the Firm and handles financial analysis to support this.
- Handles accounting for Director’s compensation. Works with Treasurer to determine amount and timing of supplemental distributions.
- Works with Management and Directors to set billing rates. Analyzes rates using market surveys and other tools to guide Firm.
- Ensures that monthly bank reconciliations are completed accurately.
- Closely monitors collections and billing processes. Works with Billing team and Management to recommend procedures to improve inventory turnover.
- Acts as primary administrator of the Firm’s accounting system.
- Oversees preparation of all required tax documentation. Works with outside CPAs to ensure compliance with all Federal and State laws and reporting requirements.
- Manages accounting aspect of firm’s 401K/profit sharing plan including calculating the 401k match and Profit Sharing Plan contributions. Ensures testing of plan is complete and all necessary reporting is completed.
- Maintains a documented system of policies and procedures within the Finance group.
- Handles financial reporting and analysis related to Firm’s Insurance and Benefit Plans. Works with team to determine appropriate offerings for the Firm. Ensures compliance with applicable laws and tax reporting.
- Manages the Accounting Assistant responsible for AP & Payroll, Billing Team, and Accounts Receivable staff. Ensures team is adequately trained on the accounting system and understands Firm policies and procedures.
- Maintains an effective system of internal controls within accounting department and throughout Firm.
- Observes confidentiality of firm and client matters.
- Observes confidentiality, integrity, and objectivity of professional standards and code of ethics in the field of accounting.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Requires supervision of the Accounting Assistant responsible for AP & Payroll, Billing Manager, Senior Biller and Accounts Receivable Clerk.
Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Education
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field with CPA certification.
Experience
At least five to seven years of experience in a law firm or professional services setting with increasing supervisory and management responsibilities. Thorough knowledge of regulations and best practices governing cash-based accounting systems. Law firm or professional services experience highly preferred.

- Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate and follow instructions effectively from a diverse group of attorneys, staff, and vendors and to provide information with professional courtesy and tact.
- Proactive, detail oriented and organized with the ability to handle competing demands in a timely and efficient manner and meet deadlines.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office(Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
