Journeyworker - Plumber
who performs maintenance, installation and repair work on piped utility systems and fixtures and on the piping and connection of equipment. This work is performed under limited supervision and using the tools and techniques of plumbing technology. Responsibilities
Perform inspections and maintenance on plumbing systems to ensure safety and functionality. Read and interpret complex schematic and construction drawings, service manuals and other technical documents. Follow instructions provided by blueprints, drawings, written materials, work orders and oral instructions. Identify, analyze, diagnose and resolve routine and complex plumbing equipment problems and component conditions. Adhere to all applicable requirements, including safety standards and local codes. Interpret diagrams, blueprints and other related drawings. Inventory and properly track supplies, equipment, tools and machinery. Communicate with Facilities leadership, other related trades, apprentices and coworkers effectively to promote efficiency. Train peers and lower-level positions as directed by supervisor, based on the guidelines of the JHU Apprenticeship program. Work with the Plumbing Maintenance Workers to requisition in-house stock items. Request non-stock items for purchase subject to supervisor approval. Make decisions based on trade practices, National Plumbing Code, and supervisor direction as appropriate for the scope of this position. Plan and estimate the materials and labor required to perform demand work and construction projects. Actively engage Plumbing Maintenance Workers in skills-based training activities to build their knowledge and effectively train them for growing skills independence. Recommend and participate in departmental plumbing operations development, improvement, and implementation as it relates to current/anticipated workload. Perform work within reasonable lengths of time as measured against trade, industry or engineered standards. Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED required. Journeyman or Master License required. Five years of related experience required. Preferred Qualifications
Must be able to effectively communicate with supervisors, co-workers and departmental clients. Possesses the ability to solve problems and manage information effectively. Must be able to complete tasks based on pre-determined timelines and deadlines. Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Advanced knowledge of plumbing techniques, planning, estimating, codes, procedures and materials as demonstrated by passing a master plumbing certification exam administered by a local or state government. Applies high level of plumbing and safety knowledge indicated herein. Safely uses tools and equipment. Knowledge of safety rules, procedures and practices, including the proper use of safety equipment defined by OSHA and industry standards. Identifies and avoids hazards as indicated by warning labels, signage, lights and other warning devices. Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications
Master Plumbing License preferred. Successful completion of a Plumbing Apprenticeship Program which is approved/accepted by local or state government. Physical Requirements
Works in shop and mechanical area environments with exposure to dust, heat, cold, noise and fumes. Work may be performed outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures and other weather conditions. Works within confined spaces as needed. Works at heights of up to 30 feet above surface using ladders, lifts and equipment. Work requires ability to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time. Work requires ability to lift, push, pull, move, transport and position tools, equipment and materials weighing up to 75 pounds. Work requires the use of protective safety devices including, but not limited to, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, infection prevention apparel/apparatus, back belt. Work requires high visual acuity. Work requires high level of manual dexterity. * This is a Bargaining Unit position. All newly hired employees in Bargaining Unit positions shall be considered “probationary” employees until completion of 90 calendar days of employment. The university will notify the employees’ union. Bargaining Unit employees shall become eligible for benefits upon completion of their probationary period.
