Overview
This is a full-time on-site role for an Assistant Public Defender at the Essex County Public Defender’s Office located in Elizabethtown, NY. The office represents indigent individuals in local Criminal Court and County Court proceedings. The Assistant Public Defender is accountable for providing high‑quality representation to our clients, including case preparation, legal research, drafting motions, appearing at hearings, and managing caseloads. Responsibilities
Prepare each case efficiently and expeditiously Advise and counsel each client Establish and maintain a professional relationship with each client Use investigators, mitigation and other support staff effectively and efficiently Demonstrate professional demeanor Exercise sound judgment to achieve desired results Interview clients in jails when required Qualifications
Licensed to practice law in the State of New York (recent graduates awaiting NYS Bar results are welcome to apply) Excellent verbal, computer, and communication skills Valid New York Driver’s License, proof of automobile insurance, and reliable vehicle (travel is required)
