Position Summary

Central Michigan University seeks an accomplished, strategic technology leader to serve as Executive Director of Infrastructure within the Office of Information Technology (OIT). The role will shape and lead enterprise‑class infrastructure services—including networks, data centers, cloud services, enterprise platforms, identity and access management, and related operational services—ensuring they are secure, resilient, scalable, and aligned with CMU’s academic and administrative priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide vision, leadership, and oversight for CMU’s core technology foundations.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor a strategic, comprehensive infrastructure strategy and portfolio that meets evolving business and IT requirements.
  • Manage the lifecycle of technical infrastructure, including selecting solutions, acquiring or building appropriate additions, and maintaining performance to required standards.
  • Lead major investments, manage risk, and advance opportunities for the utilization of CMU’s IT investments.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Information Security Officer to develop and implement technical controls for CMU’s Information Security Program.
  • Oversee the infrastructure group’s project portfolio, ensuring effective communication among interdisciplinary project staff and OIT staff.
  • Serve as CMU’s primary technical contact for hardware and manage a team of 35‑40 infrastructure staff, including hiring, training, performance management, and annual reviews.
  • Monitor technology trends, facilitate a metrics and reporting framework, and optimize internal processes such as change, asset, incident, and configuration management.
  • Provide regular reporting on infrastructure status to CMU committees and other constituents.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Telecommunications or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum ten years of progressive work experience, including supervision.
  • Experience managing large‑scale enterprise networks and systems, systems design, architecture, and cloud services.
  • Experience with system, server, hardware, and cloud service evaluation, selection, and implementation.
  • Experience leading technical transitions and managing disaster recovery.
  • Strong communication, persuasion, negotiation, and team leadership skills.
  • Ability to articulate ideas, needs, and technical strategy in a leadership role.
  • Experience with technology upgrade cost forecasting, budget management, vendor management, and IT procurement.
  • Willingness to travel to off‑campus locations for education, professional development, and conferences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • Knowledge of VoIP, Cisco networking technologies, systems and storage architectures, and enterprise network architectures.
  • Experience in a higher education environment and with SAAS, IAAS, PAAS, and other cloud environments.
  • Experience with disaster recovery planning and response implementation.
  • Knowledge of information security frameworks such as ISO/IEC 27001, ITIL, COBIT, and NIST.
  • Professional certifications such as PMP, ITIL, CISSP, CISM, or vendor certifications.

Compensation and Benefits

Pay Range: $125,000 – $150,000 annually.
