Job Summary

The Sr. Media Relations Specialist coordinates, edits and approves press releases, and develops placement strategies in alignment with the university’s mission and goals. The role works with videographers, photographers and others to enhance the visual impact of stories. Writes press releases, including cross-unit news and stories of strategic significance for the university. Edits others’ content. Develops media placement strategies with account managers and colleagues in line with division and university goals. Builds and maintains relationships with news media, emphasizing specialty national media to disseminate FIU research to a national audience. Supervises members of the Media Relations team, including interns, in drafting press releases and other content. Maintains frequent contact with academic and administrative offices; establishes rapport with personnel and external constituencies at all levels. Handles confidential matters whose untimely disclosure could be detrimental. Participates in the university’s emergency communication plan and may report to work after hours or when the university is closed. Collaborates with the Marketing and News & Communications team on multimedia content production. Leads the Media Relations team’s social media strategy, coordinating messaging with digital and social media managers; drafts social media content related to research (including Conversation pieces). Performs essential duties during emergencies (e.g., hurricanes, public health emergencies) and may be required to report to work during university emergency closings with appropriate notification. Works with local, national, and international media relation outlets. Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of experience in journalism, public relations, or a related field. Desired Qualifications

Strong writing skills, attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines, and knowledge of AP style. Experience in media relations or communications for a large university, healthcare system, or similarly complex organization. Experience collaborating with videographers, photographers and creative teams to enhance visual and multimedia impact. Spanish language skills (writing and editing). Ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple deadlines. Job Category
