Under the general direction of the Executive Director and direct supervision of the Director of Member Services, the Communications Manager leads AML’s day-to-day communications and storytelling efforts. This position blends strategy and execution: you’ll help define how AML shows up in the world, and you’ll also be the one writing, editing, posting, coordinating, and occasionally troubleshooting along the way. You’ll work closely with program staff, members, partners, and leadership to translate complex policy, funding, and local government issues into clear, compelling, and engaging communications—while ensuring consistency in tone, voice, and values. What You’ll Do

Storytelling & Voice Help define, strengthen, and consistently apply AML’s voice across platforms. Tell the stories of Alaska’s local governments with clarity, warmth, accuracy, and respect. Translate complex issues into accessible, engaging narratives for diverse audiences. Plan and implement communications strategies across digital, print, and earned media. Draft and edit content including newsletters, blog posts, social media, talking points, press releases, and reports. Manage and monitor AML’s social media presence. Serve as a point of contact for media inquiries, coordinating with leadership and staff as needed. Work closely with AML staff and program leads to support communications needs across the organization. Coach and support colleagues on messaging, framing, and communications best practices. Support member engagement and external partnerships through thoughtful outreach. Quality & Growth Balance productivity with intention—knowing when to move fast and when to slow down for quality. Evaluate what’s working (and what isn’t) and help AML continuously improve how it communicates. Bring creativity, humor, and problem-solving to a dynamic, sometimes unpredictable environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience with communications strategy, marketing, and storytelling. Familiarity with social media platforms and content management. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Skill in translating complex information into clear, engaging content. Comfort working with elected officials, staff, partners, and the public. Proficiency with common office and communications tools. Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in any field or equivalent professional experience. Several years of professional communications, marketing, or related experience. Experience with municipal, nonprofit, or public-interest organizations is a plus. A sense of humor and a collaborative spirit are strongly encouraged. This position is based in a standard office environment, with some travel (primarily within Alaska). Salary and compensation will be commensurate with experience and aligned with AML’s exempt manager-level roles, $85,539-118,126. Why Work at AML?
