Overview
Please note that this is a seasonal position and will start in April 2026. PURPOSE OF POSITION:
To operate ARRC Gift Shop, selling and maintaining inventory control of retail items.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for the daily operation of ARRC Gift Shop. Duties include opening and closing of store, setting up and putting away displays as needed; setting up advertising displays or arranging merchandise to promote sales; operating cash register, computer inventory tracking system, and credit card machine.
Responsible for gift shop’s cash bank. Duties include performing check out and balancing the end of the day accounting paperwork involving cash, credit card, and internal sales; preparing daily deposits, preparing and receiving change orders, reconciling and preparing daily sales reports.
Responsible for adequacy of gift shop inventory. Duties include replenishing supplies by completing daily inventory sheets and submitting to the Gift Shop Warehouse, retrieving new stock from the Warehouse, verifying all items are labeled with accurate price tags, and keeping track of out of stock items. Updates shop inventory record to support spot inventory audits.
Assists the Gift Shop Inventory Technician in processing all gift shop orders made online or via phone. Pulls and processes sales, bags, addresses items and submits to the Warehouse for mailing.
Enters data into data base and prepares tally of data from onboard surveys relating to customers satisfaction and comments. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.
Knowledge and Skills
Factor 1 - Knowledge Required: Basic knowledge of accounting procedures; knowledge of inventory control; ability to total prices of items purchased, collect cash or charge card payment, and make change; skill in operation of cash register, credit card machine, 10-key by sight, and fax machine; ability to reconcile daily sales reports, prepare deposits, and maintain balanced cash funds; basic computer skills using computerized cash register and inventory control system, word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail software; ability to communicate effectively and resolve problems with minimal supervision; skill in setting up advertising displays or arranging merchandise to promote sales.
Factor 2 - Supervisory Control: Incumbent works under general direction; work is reviewed for timeliness, accuracy, prioritization, and organization.
Factor 3 - Guidelines: Established gift shop procedures for accountability of sales, inventory, safeguarding the change fund, and end-of-day accounting.
Factor 4 - Complexity: Ensures stock is stocked and organized, price tags are accurate, storeroom inventory is up-to-date, and security of stock is maintained. Accountable for all monies and sales reports. Resolves inventory, accounting, and cash register or card machine issues.
Factor 5 - Scope and Effect: Accuracy in handling cash funds, merchandise pricing, and inventory maintenance directly affects ARRC income.
Factor 6 - Personal Contacts: Contacts include employees, supervisors, tour guides, and the general public including independent travelers, travel agents, tour companies, and operators.
Factor 7 - Purpose of Contact: To sell ARRC Gift Shop items and answer inquiries regarding online sales and mail order procedures.
Factor 8 - Physical Demands: May be required to sit or stand for extended periods; ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Factor 9 - Work Environment: Moderate safety risk; involves moving displays, boxes, and working around trains; typically seasonal from April to September.
Qualifications
Required:
- High School diploma or GED
- One year of front line customer service
- Skill in operation of cash register, credit card equipment, 10-key by sight, and fax machine
- Basic computer skills using computerized cash register and inventory system, word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail software
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

Retail sales store operations
