PARKS & RECREATION - LIFEGUARD (SEASONAL TEMPORARY)

Minimum Qualifications
Candidate must be at least 15 years of age by time of hire.
Must be certified by the time of employment.
PLEASE NOTE: Expired or pending Certifications will not be considered.
Certificates and Licenses Required Must have or obtain by date of hire a valid permit or driver's license applicable to job responsibilities, with a driving record acceptable to the County of El Paso as applicable to the location the incumbent will be working or be required to work at.
Lifeguard Certification.
Current American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (ARC) Certifications by time of hire.
In order to access into the County’s network and systems, a personal smart device is required by the hire start date.
Certifications to be obtained at individual's own expense.
Essential Duties
Monitors swimming pool to enforce safety rules and regulations and cautions swimmers about unsafe swimming practices.
Rescues swimmers using necessary lifesaving techniques and administers minor first aid.
Participates in judging and timing swimming events, as assigned.
Participates in training of swimming pool personnel, as assigned.
Prepares necessary daily forms accurately.
Performs opening and closing procedures.
Cleans pool and pool area.
Performs minor adjustments and maintenance to the swimming pool's filtration and chlorination systems and provides maintenance support (chemical tests, maintenance order requests), as needed in absence of Aquatics Manager.
Ensures pool is ready for use, including setting up lanes.
Gives swimming instructions, completes training programs prior to and during the season.
Substitutes, if assigned, during temporary absences by performing delegated duties sufficient to maintain continuity of normal operations.
Commits self to providing excellent customer service and demonstrates commitment through cooperative team and individual efforts.
Creates a high quality work culture through participation in and emphasis on training and mentoring to develop leadership, management, and technical skills in self and all employees, including safety related training and skills.
Other Important Duties
Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
May work weekends and holidays.
May drive to other pool locations throughout the county.
As members of the County of El Paso Emergency Response System, all El Paso County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to train on emergency response and/or perform certain emergency services at the direction of their supervisor.
Summary of Position The Lifeguard under general supervision enforces swimming pool safety rules and regulations, prevents injuries by minimizing hazardous situations and/or behaviors, and engages in general tasks associated with the operation of a swimming pool.
Minimum Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of:
aquatics lifesaving techniques and procedures; first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation techniques and procedures; principles and processes for providing customer and personal services; relevant pool equipment and its uses; policies, procedures, and strategies to promote pool safety; the English language; principles and methods for teaching and instructing individuals and groups; life saving and first aid methods and techniques as applied to accidents in the water and surrounding areas.
Skill/Ability to:
proficiently swim; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; see details at a distance; speak clearly so others can understand; be aware of others' reactions and understand why they react as they do; effectively provide swimming instruction when needed; use training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things; swim and rescue distressed persons, using rescue techniques and equipment; pass a Background Investigation.
