Underwriting Specialist / Executive Underwriter – Commercial Surety
Zurich North America seeks an Underwriting Specialist or Executive Underwriter to join our Commercial Surety team in Chicago or virtual locations in Ohio, Missouri, or Michigan.
Responsibilities
Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.
Qualify accounts to balance business opportunity and negotiate terms & conditions.
Cross‑sell other lines of business to increase product density.
Update required systems with broker/client visits and account status within specified time frame.
Calculate target price accurately using underwriting tools.
Diagnose and develop recommendations to solve unique business unit and customer problems.
Demonstrate specialized knowledge and expertise in products and industry.
Administer and monitor underwriting rules, guidelines, insurance laws, regulations, and rating manuals.
Work at the highest authority limits on assignments utilizing the highest degree of technical complexity.
Underwriting Specialist Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and 3+ years of experience in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking OR
High School Diploma or equivalent and 6+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support OR
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 1+ years in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking OR
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 4+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support AND
Knowledge of line/s of business and legal & regulatory guidelines.
Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
Experience with Microsoft Office.
Executive Underwriter Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and 5+ years of experience in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking OR
High School Diploma or equivalent and 10+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support OR
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 3+ years in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking OR
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 8+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support AND
Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
Experience working in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree.
Surety knowledge/experience and knowledge of the legal & regulatory guidelines.
Understanding of broker relationship structure.
Ability to analyze and understand complicated credit assessments, trends, and strategies.
Investigative skills (curiosity) to develop understanding of business strategies, trends, complex contracts, and long‑term obligations.
Ability to coherently articulate strategies and financial concepts, formulating fact‑based conclusions and recommendations.
Prior experience managing/growing profitable portfolio of customers.
Negotiation experience with brokers and large, international, and national organizations.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Compensation Base salary range $75,000.00 – $165,000.00. Short‑term incentive bonus eligibility 10%–15%.
