Overview
The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive of Berthoud Habitat for Humanity (BHFH), providing visionary, strategic, operational, and relational leadership to advance the organization’s mission of building safe, affordable homes while fostering community. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED is responsible for overall organizational performance, long-term sustainability, real estate and construction strategy, fund development, community partnerships, staff leadership, and governance compliance. This role requires a dynamic, highly relational leader who can operate at both strategic and tactical levels – guiding a growing affiliate through complete real estate development, capital planning, and organizational scaling with and community-centered ministry mindset in which to further impact in alignment with the mission of the organization. Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership & Strategy
Serve as chief executive officer responsible for overall direction, performance, and sustainability of the affiliate Lead strategic planning processes and translate long-range vision into actionable, measurable objectives. Align mission, vision, values, and spiritual grounding across all programs, staff, and partnerships. Establish organizational rhythms, performance metrics, and accountability structures. Act as primary liaison to the Board of Directors, providing strategic insight, timely reporting, and recommendation for governance decision-making. Ensure full compliance with Habitat for Humanity (HFHI), Habitat for Humanity of Colorado (HFHC), state and federal regulations, mortgage origination, and audit standards Oversee governance systems including bylaws, board policies, employee handbook, and internal controls Support board development, committee structure, onboarding, and leadership effectiveness Manage organizational risk related to finance, construction, real estate, compliance, and human resources Financial Stewardship & Operational Excellence
Provide executive oversight of budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning aligned with diverse revenue streams including fundraising and development initiatives, mortgage income, and ReStore operations in conjunction with construction pipeline Oversee accounting, payroll, audits, and financial reporting in collaboration with finance staff and finance committee Ensure strong internal systems, SOPs, and controls to support organizational scalability Direct operational planning across programs and administration Real Estate Lead real estate development strategy including land acquisition, due diligence, entitlements, permitting, and development planning Oversee construction operations, project sequencing, and sale of completed homes Expand and manage the affiliate’s construction pipeline, including future subdivisions and long-term land assets Collaborate with construction leadership, architects, engineers, municipalities, and development partners Advance catalytic projects that strengthen long-term organizational sustainability and community impact Oversee and engage in fund development, cultivating and stewarding individual donors, major gifts, foundations, churches, and corporate partners Oversee executive of strategic resource development plan including annual giving, monthly giving programs, special events, grants, planned giving, and capital initiatives Strengthen donor engagement, stewardship systems, and communication pipelines Identify and develop diversified revenue streams that support long-term financial resilience Community Partnerships
Act as the primary spokesperson and ambassador for BHFH Build and maintain strong relationships with local government, housing coalitions, civic leaders, businesses, faith communities, and media Represent the affiliate in local, state, and national advocacy efforts related to affordable housing Participate in community planning initiatives and housing policy conversations that advance equitable homeownership Recruit, develop, and lead a high-performing, mission-aligned staff team across multiple departments Foster a healthy organizational culture rooted in trust, compassion, accountability, and shared purpose Provide coaching, performance management, and leadership development for staff Integrate faith-centered spiritually grounded leadership practices that support wholeness and professional growth Spiritual Leadership & Mission Integration
Embody and articulate HFH’s Christian mission in a non-proselytizing, inclusive manner Lead with spiritual discernment, emotional intelligence, and values-based decision making Cultivate an environment that honors dignity, belonging, and community Support staff, volunteers, and partners in connection daily work to deeper mission and purpose Misc
Other duties as assigned. Skills and Qualifications
Demonstrated executive-level leadership experience in nonprofit, housing, community development, or related fields Proven success in strategic planning, organizational growth, and systems development Experience with fundraising, donor relations, and revenue diversification Strong financial acumen and experience overseeing budgets and audits Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and public leadership skills Education and Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in business or related professional experience required.
