Associate Director of Development – Department of Otolaryngology
The Associate Director of Development works with the Director of Development in the management of private sector fundraising to support research, patient care, and educational needs for The Johns Hopkins Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine. The Department of Otolaryngology is an international leader in the field and in head and neck cancer care.
Key Responsibilities
Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a prospect pool for new and existing annual and major gifts.
Design and implement development strategies to build a portfolio, involving relevant colleagues where necessary.
Determine annual work plan goals in consultation with departmental/divisional development leadership.
Track fundraising activity in the CRM.
Plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to annual and major gifts.
Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, gift agreements, and other development materials that articulate Johns Hopkins University's needs, values, and ambitions.
Develop and maintain comprehensive understanding of department mission, history, teaching, research, and clinical programs to effectively communicate funding opportunities.
Proactively communicate with major prospects and donors about specific ways to give, both current and deferred, to maximize gift and tax benefits.
Complete in-person and virtual donor visits each fiscal year. Goals for visits and other KPIs will be set by leadership.
Develop and participate in implementing annual stewardship plans for donors.
Develop and maintain strong, trust‑based partnerships with colleagues across the institution.
Work with faculty and institutional leaders to engage them as fundraising partners in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospective donors.
Partner with team members on the planning and execution of development‑related activities for the department, including professorship dedications, lectureships, and other stewardship events.
Participate in team‑wide activities, meetings, events, and knowledge sharing.
Represent the department on committees and at institution‑wide programming where appropriate.
Analyze data at a high level, identify prospects, demonstrate activity, and track progress toward work plan goals.
Participate in special projects, programs, initiatives as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
Partner with the Director of Development to create and execute development plans in support of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, focusing on building a prospect pool based on new prospects and past donors at the $25,000+ level.
Actively participate in strategy discussions with department leadership to build a prospect pipeline, inform fundraising priorities, and guide short‑ and long‑term planning.
Serve as primary development liaison to assigned faculty members and their care teams. Hold recurring meetings with faculty to encourage participation in development activities and secure faculty referrals.
Partner with Office of Medical Annual Giving (OMAG) to review and update stewardship and solicitation content and distribution lists.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.
Three years of related experience, with one year of professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree (Master’s or JD).
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
