The Interim Operations Director (OD) supports parishes and schools while a permanent Operations Director is sought. This temporary assignment typically lasts 4‑6 months and involves providing strategic and operational support to the Pastor (and School Principal, when applicable). The interim OD delivers leadership in finance, operations, facilities, and project management, implements Archdiocesan policies, and serves as the liaison between local ministry, the Vicariate, and Archdiocesan departments.

Responsibilities

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT – Develop and implement parish budgets; prepare annual reports; generate monthly financial reports, bank reconciliations, variance reports and forecasts. Ensure timely payment of taxes and fees and maintain internal controls according to Archdiocesan best practices.

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT – Oversee operations and maintenance; coordinate with AOC Real Estate and Construction regarding sales/leases, capital projects and repairs; liaise with Archdiocesan agencies and provide resources to the Building Committee.

HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT – Collaborate with the Pastor and Vicariate HR Manager to apply Archdiocesan policies; assist with onboarding a new Operations Director and provide administrative staffing analysis and bi‑weekly payroll processing for all parish and school employees.

COMMUNICATION/INFORMATION – Manage all parish communications to ensure staff understand Archdiocesan policies. Oversee bulletins, website, social media, email broadcasts, and direct mail assets.

PROJECT/TEAM MANAGEMENT – Foster a positive working environment rooted in Catholic teachings. Support project planning, budgeting, tracking, and oversight, and promote best‑practice implementation across parish activities.

BEST PRACTICES – Adhere to Archdiocesan best practices and identify improvement opportunities under the direction of the Director of Vicariate Operations (DVO).

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

Job Requirements

Undergraduate degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

At least three years of experience in accounting, finance, or related business practices; experience in a not‑for‑profit or church setting is a plus.

Demonstrated respect and support for Catholic Church teachings, mission, and values.

Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with initiative and a results‑oriented mindset.

Preferred experience in change management and merger integration.

Proficiency with management software tools such as Microsoft Office Suite, QuickBooks, and (bonus) UKG; experience in HR activities and continuous improvement processes.

Capacity to handle highly confidential information.

Valid Illinois driver’s license and willingness to travel to parishes, schools, and Archdiocesan locations throughout Cook and Lake Counties by personal transportation.

Proficiency in spoken and written English; Spanish and/or Polish language skills are a plus.

The Archdiocese of Chicago offers a comprehensive total rewards package that includes competitive compensation and benefits. The annualized salary range for this role is $69,323.00 – $78,524.00, with final pay determined by education, qualifications, experience, skills, location, and organizational needs.
