Hi, this is Eric
We’re hiring a stellar Director of Engineering to join our engineering org at Basil Systems.
The Role We're looking for a Director of Engineering to own delivery accountability for our engineering team. Your primary job is ensuring alignment between product and engineering, making sure we're allocating resources to the most impactful projects, and shipping to meet our deadlines. Your secondary job is contributing directly to the codebase, particularly on backend and infrastructure work.
This is a hybrid role - roughly 60% delivery leadership, 40% hands‑on coding. You'll work closely with me (Chief Architect) and our product team to keep engineering execution tight while also rolling up your sleeves on Python backend work and GCP infrastructure.
We're a Series A company with a small, senior engineering team. If you've been an engineering manager+ for a few years and you're ready for the next step — more ownership, more accountability, a Director title you can grow into — this could be a great fit.
Key Responsibilities
Create lightweight processes that balance accountability with startup speed — no heavyweight methodologies
Maintain alignment between product and engineering, ensuring the team is working on the highest‑impact projects and commitments are met
Be the go‑to person for the engineering team — field questions, unblock people, and route requests to the right person so engineers can stay focused
Contribute directly to the codebase — backend Python work and GCP infrastructure
Support hiring efforts as we grow the engineering team
Role Requirements
10+ years in engineering, with at least 3 of those in a leadership role (engineering manager, tech lead, or similar)
Hands‑on backend engineering experience — Python required, Go is a plus
Infrastructure experience with GCP (or strong AWS/Azure experience with willingness to learn GCP)
Enthusiastic about AI‑assisted development — you're already using tools like Claude Code, Copilot, or similar to write, review, and understand code
Comfortable in ambiguous environments — you'll help shape how we work, not inherit a playbook
Strong written communication — we're remote and async‑first
Startup mentality — resourceful, scrappy, comfortable with uncertainty
Nice‑to‑Haves
Experience at early‑stage startups (Series A‑B)
Familiarity with AI/ML infrastructure
Healthcare or pharma industry experience
Experience building processes from scratch rather than inheriting them
This role might not be for you if…
You're a heavy process advocate and want enterprise‑grade Scrum or rigid methodologies
You need perfect clarity before taking action
You're skeptical about AI‑assisted development or prefer to code without it
You have a big company mindset and expect established systems and support structures
What We Offer
Health and vision benefits
Attractive equity package
Flexible work environment (remote‑friendly)
Opportunity to work on impactful projects that are helping bring life‑saving medical products to market
Be part of a mission‑driven team solving real healthcare challenges at a critical scaling point
Our Culture At Basil Systems, we value flexibility and support a distributed team. We actively employ and support remote team members across different geographies, allowing you to work when, where, and how you work best. We are committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and safe work environment for everyone. Our team is passionate about using technology to make a meaningful difference in healthcare.
How to Apply If you're excited about this opportunity and believe you'd be a great fit for our team, please send your resume and a brief introduction to
