We are seeking an experienced Director of Business Development to lead and execute growth strategies across a broad portfolio of regulatory practices, including antitrust, environmental, government contracts and national security, legislative and public policy, life sciences and healthcare, privacy and cybersecurity, and telecommunications. This senior leadership role serves as a trusted advisor to practice leadership and plays a central role in driving revenue growth, strengthening client relationships, and enhancing the firm’s market position.
Reporting to the Chief Business Development and Marketing Officer, the Director provides both strategic direction and hands-on leadership for high-impact pursuits, client targeting initiatives, industry strategies, and lateral partner integration. The role also includes leading and developing a team of business development professionals while collaborating closely with marketing, practice leaders, and other key stakeholders across the organization.
This position is based in Washington, DC.
Responsibilities
Serve as a strategic advisor to practice chairs and group leaders, partnering closely to develop and execute business growth strategies across regulatory practices Direct and oversee firmwide business development activities, including the creation and execution of practice and industry business plans Identify priority clients, sectors, and opportunities; advance targeted pursuit strategies and track performance metrics Lead high-impact pitches and RFP responses by aligning client needs, competitive intelligence, and differentiated value propositions Drive strategic industry and sector initiatives using market intelligence, client insights, and cross-practice collaboration Coach partners and senior attorneys for client meetings and pitches, including messaging development, presentation strategy, and client-specific preparation Design and deliver business development training programs for attorneys at all levels Lead the business development integration of lateral partners, including client planning, internal connectivity, and coordinated marketing and BD support Oversee CRM and database analytics to support client development, opportunity tracking, experience management, and data-driven decision-making Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing business development team, fostering a collaborative and results-driven culture Represent regulatory practices in firmwide business development leadership initiatives Partner with marketing and practice leadership to enhance the client experience across pursuits, events, and ongoing relationships Perform additional duties as assigned Requirements
Significant experience in business development leadership within a law firm or professional services environment, preferably supporting regulatory or complex practices Proven ability to develop and execute strategic growth initiatives, including client targeting, pursuits, and industry positioning Demonstrated success leading high-stakes pitches, proposals, and RFP responses Strong leadership and people management skills, with experience developing and mentoring teams Experience supporting lateral partner integration and client transition planning Strong analytical skills, including experience leveraging CRM systems and data to drive decision-making Exceptional communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills Ability to influence and collaborate effectively with senior attorneys, firm leadership, and cross-functional teams Strategic mindset combined with a hands-on, execution-oriented approach
