Overview

Assumes administrative authority, responsibility and accountability for the provision of a program of activities designed to meet the interests and enhance the functional abilities and self-esteem of each Resident. Manages employees to provide Recreation Services according to the facility’s philosophy. In collaboration with the Administrator, allocates resources in an efficient and economic manner to ensure each resident achieves the highest practicable physical, mental and psycho social well-being. Key Responsibilities

Gather information to design Recreation programs that meet the functional levels, needs and interests of each resident. Develop and provide individual and group activities for Residents that reflect interests, are offered at hours convenient to Residents (morning, afternoon, evening, weekend), appeal to both men and women, take place in a variety of locations and include special seasonal events. Develop and implement effective procedures to ensure that all Residents are informed of upcoming activities. Develop and update Recreation Services policies and procedures that reflect the philosophy and mission of the facility. Participate in the development of the department budget and provide relevant financial information to the Administrator regarding department needs and status. Hire and retain qualified staff to provide Recreation services; conduct interviews, provide regular performance reviews, take appropriate job actions, and ensure staff meet qualification and performance standards. Maintain current skills and knowledge through continuing education and apply information to job responsibilities. Participate in fire and disaster drills and, in an emergency, carry out assigned duties to ensure Resident safety. Plan and organize Recreation activities on a monthly, weekly, bi-weekly and daily basis, including calendars, newsletters, entertainment, outings, and scheduling with activity assistants and other staff. Encourage Resident participation in activities, check on Residents by request, arrange grocery shopping and regular shopping/banking trips, and organize exercise, yoga and other wellness activities as scheduled. Supervise Activities Assistant and Fitness Instructor; coordinate with Librarian services and other enrichment activities. Plan two travel trips per year and an annual Spring Fling event; supervise procurement of supplies and promote socialization (puzzle challenges, socials, bingo, etc.). Provide activities to promote socialization and maintain Resident engagement. Act as Librarian between Whitaker Glen and local library resources as needed. Minimum Education

Minimum two (2) years college education with courses in recreation, education, social work, other behavioral sciences or clinical services. Minimum Experience

Two (2) years’ experience in a social or recreational program within the past five years, with one (1) year full-time employment in a resident activities program in a long term health care setting; or one (1) year in a supervisory role within a recreation program. Minimum Licensure/Certification

Eligible for certification as therapeutic Recreation Specialist or as an Activities professional by a recognized accrediting body. Additional Qualifications (Preferred)

Qualified as an Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant, or satisfactory. Equal Employment Opportunity
