Overview

The Painter Helper assists skilled painters in the preparation, application, and finishing of paint or coatings on vehicles, machinery, or other objects. This role requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a willingness to learn. As a helper, you will support the painting and bodywork process while ensuring that work areas are safe, clean, and properly maintained. Essential Functions

Drive customer vehicles in and out of body shop bays. Responsible for buffing all vehicles and preparing them for painting and repairs. Assist the painter and support other projects as needed. Properly and safely operate all body shop equipment. Remove rust, grease, and dirt from metal surfaces and work areas. Mask and protect areaS that should not be painted or coated. Fill cavities and dents with putty to create a smooth surface. Assist in mixing paint according to required specifications. Help select and mix coating liquids to achieve the desired color. Apply paint to surfaces using a sprayer or brush, as appropriate. Inspect painted vehicles for quality, noting any runs, sags, or unpainted spots. Maintain and clean tools and equipment, ensuring they remain in good working condition, while keeping the work area organized and tidy. Consistently wear and maintain all required safety and personal protective equipment, including a respirator, as per manufacturer’s recommendations. Adhere to all laws and regulations regarding paints, thinners, and hazardous materials, reporting any non-compliance to management. Collaborate with and assist other personnel in vehicle repairs and preparation. Stay updated on and comply with federal, state, and local regulations affecting body shop operations, including hazardous waste disposal and OSHA Right-to-Know standards. Maintain satisfactory attendance. Performs other related duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

Attention to detail and strong organizational skills are required. Basic knowledge of automotive parts or paints and systems is beneficial. Valid driver’s license and safe driving record; required to have California driver's license within 30 days following date of hire. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Ability to perform all essential functions of the job description. Preferred Qualifications

Any prior experience in bodywork, painting, or auto repair is beneficial but not required. Understanding different types of paints and coatings, as well as their proper application. Good verbal communication skills for effective teamwork and customer interaction. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Capable of reading service and repair manuals. Skilled at completing repairs efficiently and within the required timeframe. Able to interpret and follow work orders. Physical Demands

Frequently stands, walks, sits; uses hands; frequently reaches with hands and arms; frequently talks and hears. Occasionally climbs or balances; occasionally stoops, kneels, crouches, squats or crawls; occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds. Manual dexterity to handle tools and small parts. Must be able to work in tight spaces. Stand for prolonged periods of time. Work in a well-ventilated and well-lit repair shop. Exposure to hazardous conditions and equipment that may result in minor injuries. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots may be required to ensure safety while handling parts and equipment. Work both indoors and outdoors.
