Radiative Transfer and Climate Model

ORAU, New York, NY, United States

Radiative Transfer and Climate Model Postdoctoral Researcher Join to apply for the

Radiative Transfer and Climate Model

role at

ORAU . This postdoctoral position is part of the NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) and focuses on advancing radiative transfer algorithms for NASA GISS’s general circulation model (GCM).

Responsibilities

Develop the radiative kernel approach to study different feedbacks in the climate system.

Investigate the coupling among clouds, sea ice, and ocean in the polar climate system and the effect of ice‑atmosphere feedbacks on sea ice evolution.

Improve the physical representation and speed of computation for the GISS climate model, particularly the treatment of cloud inhomogeneity at GCM grid scale (~200 Km) and the K‑distribution parameterization for gaseous absorption.

Develop fast spectral radiance simulation techniques and implement the observational system simulation experiment (OSSE) based on the GISS climate model for climate change detection and attribution.

Evaluate climate modeling results through comparison with satellite measured and retrieved climate variables, especially domain‑averaged spectral and broadband radiation.

Investigate radiative interaction and feedbacks between different atmospheric constituents and the climate system.

Parameterize bio‑heating processes in ocean and sea ice in the climate model to study biophysical forcing and interactions between radiation and variations in ocean biological and physical fields.

Qualifications

Experience in mathematical, statistical methods, data analysis, and Fortran.

Preference for candidates familiar with radiative transfer.

Preferred area of study: Mathematics/Physics, Atmospheric or Climate Science.

Location Goddard Institute for Space Studies, New York City, New York.
