Work Arrangement : This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Grand Rapids Operations on a full-time basis.
This role is eligible for relocation.
The Role As a Driveline Gears Technical Expert, you will:
Serve as the technical lead and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for
hypoid gear
manufacturing across high volume machining departments and provide hands‑on troubleshooting, root‑cause analysis and corrective actions for gear quality and process issues & improvements.
Develop, maintain and train teams on standard work, setup sheets, tooling lists and cell documentation for
hypoid gear production .
Collaborate with Product Engineering, Quality, and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) on product designs for continuous improvements activities.
Mentor and coach manufacturing engineers and production personnel; transfer knowledge to sustain continuous improvements and reduce process variation with process documentation and document control.
Build and sustain a good working relationship between hypoid gear manufacturing and axle assembly teams to improve quality and manufacturing uptime.
What You’ll Do
Work directly with CNC machinery and cutting tools
Supports Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) processes across multiple departments and serve as technical lead for gears quality standards
Point of contact for various contractors and vendors that support manufacturing and maintenance
Achieve production schedules and product requirements by applying lean manufacturing principles with Continuous Improvement initiatives.
Develop, implement, and maintain process changes that support quality and throughput improvements.
Recommend capital machinery investments and business case analysis for operational efficiencies and to reduce structural costs.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Minimum 5+ years of hands‑on experience in gear manufacturing, with demonstrated ownership of process development or production launches.
Deep working knowledge and practical experience with grinding, lapping, shot peening, and gear metrology equipment and capability processes.
Proven experience assembling and troubleshooting front and rear axles, including meeting torque, preload and assembly sequencing requirements.
Strong understanding of backlash, tooth contact patterning, tooth modifications, NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) Testing Analysis and GD&T as applied to gear sets.

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience
8 +yrs of hypoid gear
Hands‑on experience with gear manufacturing equipment (CNC grinders & cutters, lapping machines) and basic controls/PLC familiarity.
Proven ability to interface with gear OEMs and machine tool builders to evaluate new technology, tooling trials, cost of ownership analyses and manufacturability improvements.
Advanced understanding of hypoid gear geometry corrections with gear CMM reports, and tooth-contact pattern adjustments via machine-setting.
