GumGum is seeking an experienced and strategic
Director of Tax
to build and lead our global tax function from the ground up. In this high‑impact, hands‑on role you will oversee all aspects of domestic and international tax strategy, compliance, reporting, and planning.
As a one‑person function, the ideal candidate is both a strategic leader and operator – someone who can design scalable processes, manage external partners, and personally drive execution. You’ll thrive in this role if you’re equally comfortable advising senior leadership on tax implications of strategic initiatives and rolling up your sleeves to complete filings, lead audits, and manage compliance calendars.
You will manage GumGum’s tax operations and relationships with outsource partners across multiple jurisdictions, including the U.S., U.K., the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Japan, and Mexico. Reporting directly to the Chief Accounting Officer, this role will partner closely with corporate leadership.
Skills You’ll Bring
Tax Compliance and Operations
Act as both the strategic lead and day‑to‑day operator for the tax function, managing end‑to‑end processes.
Oversee the company’s global income tax compliance process, including U.S. federal, state, and international filings, estimated payments, and extensions.
Manage the global tax compliance calendar to ensure timely and accurate filings across all jurisdictions.
Direct and coordinate work performed by outsourced tax service providers, ensuring high quality and accuracy.
Lead and manage federal, state, and international tax audits and inquiries, including preparation of responses and resolution of issues with tax authorities.
Maintain robust internal controls over tax processes in line with SOX and company policy requirements.
Global Tax Accounting (ASC 740)
Lead the preparation and review of the consolidated global income tax provision in accordance with ASC 740, including effective tax rate, deferred taxes, valuation allowances, and uncertain tax positions.
Oversee quarterly and annual tax accounting close processes and ensure accurate financial statement disclosures.
Collaborate with U.S. and international external auditors during financial audits and reviews.
Ensure compliance with internal reporting deadlines and accuracy of tax‑related financial data.
Tax Planning and Strategy
Partner with Accounting & Finance and Legal teams to identify and implement tax‑efficient structures for new business initiatives, product launches, and international expansion.
Lead tax due diligence and integration for domestic and international mergers, acquisitions, and reorganizations.
Provide input into cash tax forecasting, effective tax rate modeling, and long‑term planning.
Research and communicate complex tax issues and legislative changes, preparing technical memos and recommendations for management.
Evaluate opportunities to optimize global tax position while ensuring compliance and risk management.
Indirect Taxes and Other Areas
Oversee & manage R&D tax credit and Section 174 projects and calculations.
Oversee U.S. sales/use tax, VAT/GST compliance, and other indirect tax obligations across operating jurisdictions.
Partner with Finance and People Operations to ensure proper system setup, nexus monitoring, and process controls for indirect tax.
Support payroll, equity compensation, and employee mobility tax matters as needed.
Leadership and Collaboration
Operate as a “player‑coach” — balancing hands‑on execution with long‑term strategic development of the tax function.
Manage relationships with external advisors, auditors, and tax authorities.
Build and mentor a high‑performing tax function, fostering professional development and collaboration.
Develop strong cross‑functional partnerships across Accounting, FP&A, Legal, and international accounting & finance teams.
