We are expanding our footprint in Kentucky and seeking an entrepreneurial political correspondent who is also an audience-savvy storyteller—someone who can break news, contextualize politics for everyday readers, and reach people through the formats they prefer (email, social, video, or a hybrid).

This role requires someone who is highly self-directed, resourceful, and comfortable building an audience strategy from scratch. You will collaborate with Courier’s central editorial and social teams, but you will be the primary driver of coverage, reporting, storytelling, and audience engagement in Kentucky.

Summary of the Role\nThis Political Correspondent will be the lead political correspondent and on-platform messenger for Courier Newsroom in Kentucky. You will produce sharp, accessible political journalism that’s delivered in multiple formats such as on-camera videos and stories optimized for email. You’ll launch, own, and grow an audience-focused newsletter product that builds trust and engagement over time.

You will:

Break and explain local and state political news

Develop and distribute ongoing media content tailored to a specific audience

Build a personal, trusted presence across social platforms and in inboxes

Use audience insights, data, and experimentation to refine your content and reporting approach

This is a highly entrepreneurial role for someone excited to reach new audiences underserved by legacy media and help strengthen civic engagement in Kentucky.

Key Responsibilities\nPolitical Reporting & Coverage

Report, write, and produce clear, compelling political journalism rooted in local communities.

Break news and deliver fast-turnaround coverage on political developments, legislation, elections, and policy impacts.

Build and maintain a strong network of on-the-ground sources: lawmakers, organizers, community leaders, campaign staff, and advocates.

Provide additional state-level political coverage for the newsroom as needed.

Audience Content Ownership (Light Newsletter / Multi-Format)

Manage a weekly newsletter, including experimenting with new ways to increase engagement and your subscribers list.

Curate and package political reporting in an accessible, values-aligned format tailored to your target audience.

Experiment with new storytelling formats (videos, explainers, carousels, text posts, etc.) to expand reach.

Use analytics, platform insights, audience feedback, and A/B-style testing to refine your storytelling and product strategy.

Multimedia & Social Content

Create short-form video content, including on-camera explainers, TikTok/Instagram videos, or voice-overs (comfort producing presenter-led videos required)

We are presently looking for a Texas Political Editor to lead our political coverage in\nTexas, executing our content strategy in conjunction with Courier's VP of Political Content, and overseeing Courier Texas' local political correspondents.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will initially be responsible for a mix of reporting on the Texas legislature and statewide politics, and editing/management of our local correspondents. As we build out our Texas newsroom and expand across the state, however, the role will evolve into a full-time editing and management role providing guidance to our local political correspondents so they can connect important policy decisions to the day-to-day lives of Texans. This role will also launch and write an weekly aggregated political newsletter to amplify our political coverage. In addition, this role requires fostering and maintaining relationships with key political stakeholders in the state.

This is a remote position, and the ideal candidate will reside in the Austin area, but candidates in other locales across Texas will also be considered.

Specific Responsibilities include:

Develop a deep understanding of the mission and core audience for the state and best practices for communicating with that audience.\nRegularly brainstorm and pitch story and content ideas that align with our key issue beats.\nAssign stories to and take pitches from local political correspondents and edit stories they file, while also reviewing their videos and multi-media content.\nWork with the VP of Political Content as well as local political correspondents to ensure a steady flow of political coverage throughout each week.\nWork with our local political correspondents in Texas to develop, produce, and grow personalized journalistic products, such as newsletters or video series.\nWork collaboratively with our local newsletter editors in Texas, the Texas Social\nMedia Manager, and our Texas Organizing Director to ensure the state team collaborates and develops content that is strategic, compelling, informative, and helps grow our audiences.\nAuthor a weekly political newsletter amplifying our political reporting.\nTake lead on republishing political reporting from other sites that allow republishing\nBuild connections with political and community leaders/staff in the state, leaning on our Texas Organizing Director for support as needed.\nUtilize resources and editorial guidance provided by senior political and partnership leadership.\nEnsure all political coverage graphics and videos are branded with consistency and match community/local news content as well.\nThe ideal candidate will have some of the following:

5-7+ years' experience in political reporting/editing or multi-media content creation.\nExperience editing and managing reporters.\nDesire to be a part of a new media model that meets people where they are-most often on social platforms-and looking to leverage their talents to protect democracy through left-leaning, factual, relevant information rooted in shared values and well-being.\nExperience using Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other social platforms.\nAble to produce compelling social media posts that deliver key information to our audience in five seconds or less.\nComfortable in front of a camera.\nExperience using Canva or Photoshop.\nExperience editing videos.\nA grasp of AP Style\nExcellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong sense of\nvoice and tone.\nHave experience with or a willingness to learn WordPress.\nBe able to pivot/switch direction as priorities and projects change.\nBe comfortable in a startup environment.\nDemonstrate an eagerness to collaborate as part of a cross-functional state\nteam and COURIER's broader political reporting team.\nCourier Newsroom offers the following benefits:
