Overview POSITION SUMMARY

The majority of the workload is pharmacy supply management for the inpatient, outpatient, and field clinic pharmacy programs. The primary knowledge and skills used will be in the preparation / review / control of medications and other pharmaceutical products to patients, inpatient nursing staff or physicians. The work product directly affects the health of inpatients and outpatients. All pharmaceutical actions are accomplished in accordance with Federal and state law, Department of Health and Human Services Regulations, IHS requirements, and Drug Enforcement Agency regulations.

Qualifications NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Must have high school diploma or GED

Certification:

Must have and maintain a current Pharmacy Technician licensure in any state or territory of the United States.

Experience:

Must have at least three (3) years experience in a hospital / clinic setting.

Must have at least one (1) year procurement experience in a hospital / outpatient setting

Other Skills and Abilities:

A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. All employment references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas:

Positive working relationships with others

Possession of high ethical standards and no history of complaints

Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences.

Articulation skills (writing and verbal)

Must demonstrate skills in the practical use of electronic systems and database management software.

Must demonstrate intra‑venous preparation skills, and satisfactory sterile technique.

Knowledge of supply trends and medical material expiration cycles is required to effectively rotate and maintain pharmaceutical material in a state of readiness.

Must not have any prior records of substance or drug abuse.

Proficiency with computer applications such as but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

Completion of and above‑satisfactory scores on all job interviews, demonstrating to the satisfaction of the interviewees and TCRHCC that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job

Successful completion of and positive results from all background and reference checks, including positive employment references from authorized representatives of past and current employers demonstrating to the satisfaction of TCRHCC a record of satisfactory performance and that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Physical:

The incumbent must have the to stand and walk for prolonged periods of workday, sit, bend, kneel, reach and crouch frequently and drive, climb, twist and maintain balance occasionally. The incumbent must have the ability to lift, push and pull up to 10 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally. The incumbent must have the ability for telephone and keyboard use ¾ of workday frequently; simple and firm grasping, far, near, color vision, depth perception, seeing fine details, hearing norm speech and hearing overhead pages frequently and fine manipulation occasionally.

Mental:

The incumbent must have the ability to cope with high level of stress, make decision under high pressure, concentrate, Handle a high degree of flexibility, handle multiple priorities in a stress situation, work alone, demonstrate high degree of patience for prolonged periods of workday, adapt to shift work, work in areas that are close and crowded frequently and cope with anger/fear/hostility of other in a calm way, manage altercations occasionally.

Environmental:

The incumbent may be exposed to infectious diseases, chemical agents, dust, fumes, gases, extremes in temperature or humidity, hazardous moving equipment, unprotected heights, and loud noises occasionally.

Responsibilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Manage the drug supply function of the pharmacy department from assessment of need, preparing purchase orders and requests, placing phone orders to wholesalers or prime vendors, receipt and placement of incoming orders into inventory with appropriate documentation.

Conduct investigations to determine causes of inventory overage and drug shortage.

Consider the urgency of the request for drugs when ordering so that supplies are available as needed. Items include narcotics, hazardous, blood derivative products and other items designated as either highly preferable or of high abuse potential in accordance with TCRHCC Policies and procedures.

Review demand data to determine items that may be obsolete or excess to the needs of the organization, offers recommendations for utilization, and prepares reports and necessary documentation for transfer of property.

Responsible for medication recalls, medication returns, medication waste processes, and required legal documentation.

Procure, store and distribute all controlled substances; responsible for maintenance and oversight of required controlled substances records.

Assures that medication and supply storage sites within pharmacy are maintained in a manner that assures product quality and integrity.

Is responsible for the proper disposal of outdated or unserviceable pharmaceuticals in compliance with established procedures.

Receives disposition instructions and arranges for destruction of those items which are identified by TCRHCC or having exceeded shelf life for destruction in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Provide the pharmacy director with velocity reports or drug expenditure reports on a monthly basis by using automated systems input and catalog data and to produce reports to analyze the assembly management process.

Maintain computerized invoices, records, logs, and registers for each item to detail all transactions. Maintains up‑to‑date signature cards/forms for all authorized recipients. Stores items in appropriate order in approved storage areas/containers and coordinates with others to accomplish changes in locations as necessary to accommodate new items or removal of unnecessary items.

Coordinate with administrative services or contract personnel on any difficulties encountered in the procurement process.

Transfer medication from vials to the appropriate number of sterile, disposable syringes, using aseptic techniques.

Provide input and advises on the development of all policies and procedures related to purchasing and controlled substances systems.

Responsible for the implementation process for all policies and procedures

Assures compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, The Joint Commission, and other standards as well as all related policies and procedures.

Determines availability of drugs based on physician requests and par levels (ordered by generic or trade names) on hospital formularies; obtains patient information on prescriptions and maintain the Pharmacy Patient Medication Profiles;

Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities in the Pharmacy as required by the Joint Commission that includes participation in organized staff meetings and continuing education programs as conducted by pharmacy, medical, or nursing staffs.

Understands characteristics of new medications/items and the operation of new equipment are taught through periodic formal training sessions.

Plans and completes tasks based on the established protocol or plan or accepted pharmaceutical practices. A Pharmacist is available for professional guidance when required; the technician informs the Supervisor of problems or unusual situations, with recommendations for appropriate action.

Work with the Lead Tech and Supervisor to suggest system enhancements, new business procedures & good customer service processes.

Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role prior to duties as assigned or where it is appropriate to place.

Ensure proper PPE is worn at all times while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH‑approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.

Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (See CDC website for most current updates).

Complete task training for all routing cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level or patient, visitor, employee and external customer satisfaction.

Performs other duties as assigned.
