Executive Director, Pathology: BIDMC
— Boston, MA Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, 330 Brookline Avenue, Boston, MA 02215. This role is an experienced healthcare leader responsible for all technical operational, clinical, and financial performance for BIDMC Pathology. The ED will oversee and implement a range of program initiatives to support BIDMC initiatives and will work closely with Pathology and hospital leadership to evaluate best industry practices and internal systems, with a focus on current operations and future growth. This position reports to the CAO, Pathology.
Job Responsibilities
Responsible for executing the BIDMC pathology strategic plan and initiatives in response to organizational imperatives. Assist in developing and implementing strategic plans aligned with the organization’s goals to contribute to growth, revenue enhancement, and cost containment while maximizing productivity. Directly accountable for executing the strategy consistently in all practice settings.
Collaborate with the CAO to plan and implement policies and procedures, programs, and initiatives that support the mission, growth, and success of the institution. Drive innovation in pathology services to meet BIDMC’s future needs. Lead, serve, and participate in leadership-level committees. Maintain effective communication across all levels of personnel.
Supervise and direct the work of all operational and quality pathology leaders. Plan, organize, manage, and evaluate operational activities, programs, strategies, and initiatives to enhance pathology operations with high quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
Ensure appropriate staffing of pathology laboratories in compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. Oversee hiring, training, and development of directors and managers. Promote policies and opportunities for team members to thrive while upholding patient care, education, and research missions.
Collaborate on development of hospital operating budgets and annual revenue/expense projections for pathology. Coordinate with HMFP/LSP Admin Director Pathology to align budgets with strategic growth goals. Responsible for financial targets and performance metrics in BIDMC pathology operations, including budget development and oversight.
Work with medical staff and pathology medical directors to ensure pathology services support clinical and patient safety initiatives. Ensure high-quality and timely diagnostic support and testing results.
Implement and meet quality, safety, and regulatory requirements and KPIs. Develop monitoring dashboards and report on metrics related to pathology laboratory activities to improve quality, efficiency, volume, and satisfaction. Ensure compliance with CAP, JC, FDA, AABB, FACT, and other standards; collaborate with hospital quality and regulatory leaders. Manage pathology laboratory statistics and data collection as required.
Identify and recommend actions to address organizational or operational problems; oversee implementation and adherence of recommended changes.
Collaborate with BILH and local teams for contracting, facilities, and cross-functional departments to ensure uninterrupted operations and successful project execution. Coordinate with information technology systems to support ongoing and new initiatives. Work with stakeholders to oversee capital project development and lab build improvements.
Required Qualifications
Advanced degree in health care business administration (MHA, MBA or equivalent) required.
Medical Technologist with ASCP or comparable certification, or bachelor’s degree in biology (preferred).
7–10 years of progressive management experience in pathology-related operations.
Experience in a matrixed health care system (preferred).
Ability to travel to off-site locations.
Pay and Benefits Pay Range:
$187,200.00 USD – $228,800.00 USD
The pay range listed is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined by factors including seniority, education, training, relevant experience and certifications, geography, and job responsibilities, as permissible by law.
