Here at Louisiana First News, we’re looking for a driven, curious, and authoritative Political Reporter to cover Louisiana politics from the heart of the state capitol. Based in Baton Rouge, this role will lead coverage of state government, elections, public policy, and political power players across Louisiana Nexstar Stations. If you thrive on breaking news, accountability journalism, and explaining complex political issues in a way that matters to everyday Louisianians, this is the beat for you.

You’ll be at the center of decision-making—covering the State Legislature, Governor’s Office, constitutional officers, and statewide campaigns—while traveling across Louisiana to report on how politics impacts communities from the bayou to the bootheel.

Key Responsibilities

Report, write, and produce in-depth stories on Louisiana state and local politics, including legislation, elections, public policy, and political investigations

Serve as the primary reporter covering the Louisiana State Capitol, legislative sessions, and political press conferences

Co-produce and anchor weekly program “This Week in Louisiana Politics”.

Develop and maintain strong sources among elected officials, government agencies, political strategists, and community leaders

Break political news and provide timely analysis across multiple platforms (broadcast, digital, and social media)

Translate complex political issues into clear, engaging stories that connect policy decisions to real-life impacts

Conduct live shots, interviews, and on-air reporting as required

Collaborate with editors, producers, and digital teams to maximize reach and storytelling impact

Ensure all reporting meets the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and journalistic ethics

Monitor statewide political trends and anticipate emerging stories

May require some travel throughout Louisiana as needed for campaign coverage, elections, and/or major political events

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Political Science, Communications, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

Proven experience reporting on politics, government, or public policy (preferred) Strong writing, reporting, and storytelling skills

Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt quickly to breaking news

Confident on-camera presence and interview skills

Solid understanding of Louisiana politics, government structure, and political culture (or a strong desire to learn quickly)

Experience using digital and social media platforms to enhance political coverage

Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel statewide
