Under the direction of the Executive Director of the North State Planning and Development Collective and in collaboration with University Communications, the Communications and Media Relations Coordinator will develop, implement, and manage comprehensive communications strategies and media outreach efforts that advance the objectives of three campus organizations: the North State Planning and Development Collective (NSPDC), the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve (BCCER), and the Center for Regenerative Agriculture and Resilient Systems (CRARS). This position is responsible for both the strategic planning and hands-on execution of communications initiatives, including storytelling, media pitching and relations, digital and print content development, fundraising appeals, and the management of key publications for each unit—such as newsletters, impact stories, and annual reports. The coordinator will proactively identify compelling story opportunities that illuminate the work of NSPDC, BCCER, and CRARS in regional sustainability, economic and community development, and ecological restoration. They will translate complex, technical, and often academic subject matter into accessible, engaging narratives while cultivating strong relationships with local, regional, and national media to secure impactful press coverage. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong ability to uncover newsworthy angles, elevate visibility beyond the local media market, and tailor messaging to diverse audiences. This position will work collaboratively with the directors and staff of NSPDC, BCCER, and CRARS, as well as University Communications, to ensure aligned, strategic, and high-quality communication across all platforms and products. Media and Public Relations (50 percent)
Develop, implement, and evaluate media relations and communications plans to promote the accomplishments, current projects, and future goals of NSPDC, BCCER, and CRARS. Write and edit press releases, feature stories, and media pitches. Cultivate and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, and influencers to increase press coverage of the three organizations. Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries and coordinate interviews, statements, and responses on behalf of the three organizations. Identify and secure opportunities for op-eds, expert commentary, and feature stories. Track and analyze media coverage and prepare reports and strategic recommendations to improve media strategies. Storytelling and Content Development (35 percent)
Identify and produce stories that highlight key projects, research, student and faculty profiles, regional collaborations, and community impact. Work collaboratively with teams from all three organizations to gather information, photos, and quotes for storytelling across digital, print, and broadcast platforms. Create content for Chico State Today, the University’s magazine, and social media channels that align with each organization’s brand and messaging priorities. Uphold journalistic standards, copyright, and ethical guidelines in all produced content. Develop and manage the production of major publications—including annual reports, newsletters, and impact summaries—from concept and content planning through writing, editing, design coordination, and final delivery. Collaborate with fundraising and development teams to write and produce donor appeals, stewardship communications, and materials for external funding partners. Provide or coordinate photography, videography, and multimedia support for communications projects. Community and Partner Engagement (10 percent)
Support communication and logistics for events hosted by NSPDC, BCCER, and CRARS. Collaborate with University Communications and other Chico State partners to ensure alignment with institutional messaging and brand strategy. Analysis and Strategic Support (5 percent)
Track and analyze communications metrics (media coverage, engagement, reach) and prepare regular summaries for leadership. Use data insights to refine media and content strategies. Contribute creative ideas to enhance storytelling, visibility, and impact across diverse audiences. Provide ongoing strategic counsel to leadership on communications opportunities, risks, and messaging recommendations. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or a related field. Five years of experience in media relations, public information, publications, or storytelling roles. Strong writing, editing, and media pitching skills, with demonstrated success securing earned media. Familiarity with environmental, agricultural, or regional development topics preferred. Knowledge of social media strategy, digital storytelling, and multimedia tools. Physical and Mental Requirements: Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks. Ability to adjust to change in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment (e.g., work environment, technology) and work within deadlines. Ability to work independently under general direction and function cooperatively and productively as a member of a unit. Environmental Working Conditions: The physical environment requires the employee to work both indoors and outdoors in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
