
Overview
Landscape Architect / 3D Designer is responsible for creating visually compelling, functional, and sustainable landscape designs that enhance outdoor environments. This role requires a balance of creativity, technical expertise, and project management skills. You will work closely with clients to understand their goals, preferences, and budget constraints, translating concepts into well-planned landscape designs that balance aesthetics, sustainability, and cost efficiency. A key part of the role is helping clients visualize their projects through detailed plans and high-quality 3D renderings. This position also involves navigating environmental considerations, local regulations, and permitting requirements. Strong communication and coordination skills are essential, as you will collaborate with clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, and internal teams to ensure projects are executed accurately, efficiently, and within budget. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver who enjoys guiding clients through the full landscaping process—from initial concept through project completion. This is a full-time, on-site role based in Monterey, CA, requiring work-related travel throughout Monterey County. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required; visa sponsorship is not available.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and design landscape projects in alignment with client objectives, site conditions, surrounding environments, and applicable regulations.
Develop comprehensive design packages using CAD software, Photoshop, scaled drawings, sketches, and 3D rendering tools such as SketchUp and Vectorworks.
Advise clients on plant selection, placement, and maintenance in compliance with Monterey Peninsula and California landscaping guidelines.
Prepare, submit, and manage all required permits and approvals, coordinating with local jurisdictions and regulatory agencies.
Develop accurate project estimates, including material takeoffs and cost analyses; estimating experience is required.
Manage project budgets, drawing schedules, and timelines to ensure financial and operational efficiency.
Coordinate and oversee construction contractors and subcontractors to ensure designs are executed as approved.
Maintain complete and accurate project documentation for compliance, recordkeeping, and legal purposes.
Qualifications Education
Accredited degree in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, or a related field.
Certifications such as California CSE (leading to Professional Landscape Architect - PLA) or successful completion of LARE are required.
Experience
7+ years of progressive experience in architecture, landscape design, or a related field.
Proven experience leading teams and managing client communications.
Software & Technical Skills
5+ years of proficiency with SketchUp, AutoCAD, or similar 3D architectural/design tools.
Experience using project management software such as MS Project, Monday.com, or similar platforms.
Additional Requirements
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience leading diverse teams performing labor-intensive work.
Valid driver's license with the ability to travel locally and regionally as needed.
Languages: English (required); Spanish (preferred).
