Sacred Heart Catholic Church located in Lake Worth, FL is searching for a full time Director of Music Ministries.

The Director of Music Ministries for Sacred Heart Catholic Church is a lay ecclesial minister who will develop and sustain a prayerful, singing assembly at the weekend Masses, holy days and school liturgies and in so doing, help to increase regular Mass attendance. This person shares the Catholic faith and understands and manifests the Second Vatican Council’s affirmation that “the musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as sacred song closely bound to the text; it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy.” The director will deepen liturgical understanding through music and sung prayer. The Music Minister performs all duties and responsibilities in alignment with the mission, vision and values of the Catholic Diocese of Palm Beach.

The Director of Music Ministries is the person who organizes and directs the program of sacred music for the liturgical and devotional life of the parish under the direction of the pastor and in collaboration with the pastoral staff. The following responsibilities of the Director of Music Ministries are based on the National Certification Standards for the Director of Music Ministries.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other Duties May Be Assigned)

The Parish Director of Music Ministries supervises the volunteer Choir Directors and volunteer Choir members of other liturgies (e.g. 6:00 pm & 8:00 pm Masses).

Responsible for all music associated with liturgy including choir(s) direction as accompanist, cantor and/or choir director including develop and train choral and instrumental assembles, cantors and accompanies, to lead and support the liturgical music required for all music associated with worship, religious education, social ministry and evangelization.

Develop prayerful, singing assembly through celebration, preparation and evaluation, education and personal ministry.

Participates and collaborates in planning sacramental celebrations and other liturgies with the parish staff, parish leaders and volunteers, including religious education, RCIA and youth ministry.

Coordinate and schedule musicians, cantors, accompanists, for all liturgies including Advent and Christmas services, Holy Week services, penance services, anointing masses and any other liturgical services as needed, including weddings and funerals if requested. Such services may include parish secular feasts, holy days of obligation, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Labor Day, All Souls Day, etc., as well as communal celebrations of Confirmation, Baptism, Anointing of the Sick, Reconciliation and First Communion.

Lead music (play/direct choirs and cantor) at all English weekend Masses; currently 4 Masses: Saturday 4 pm; Sunday 7:30 am, 9 am; and 11 am. Weddings and funerals – extra stipend is provided.

Coordinate trilingual Masses at various times throughout the year, as well as events like First Communion and Confirmation

Provide prelude music and additional rehearsal with the assembly, if needed, before masses

Secure instrumentalist as needed for special occasions

Secure a replacement when not available to perform

Liturgical preparation through music selection using appropriate musical, pastoral and liturgical judgment.

Responsible for preparing and submitting a music budget to the Pastor and the Parish Finance Council annually.

Responsible for having a least two times a week rehearsals for about two hours each.

Collaborate and communicate closely with pastoral staff and volunteers to develop and implement a unified approach to liturgical, catechetical and apostolic work in the parish.

Prepare PowerPoints for Masses and liturgies; including songs and hymns, readings and gospels and submitting in a timely fashion.

Consult, advise and support leaders of all English and Spanish Masses in the Parish.

Responsible for all clerical activity related to the position including maintaining schedules of each choir; replacement of worship aids; bulletin notices; phone calls and all ministry-related correspondence.

Build and maintain a choral library.

Update and renew license for music, music books or any software necessary for the music ministry.

Attend parish liturgy meetings which concern the music ministry and inform all the other music leaders.

Coordinate maintenance tasks and care of music equipment and supplies as well as overseeing organ and piano tuning and repair and availability of mics, cables and music stands.

Seek and take learning opportunities to increase skills and knowledge base in field of liturgical music. Continuing education in musical/liturgical education will be determined in consultation between the Music Director and the Pastor to further develop the former’s professional skills.

Prepare annual report on music program for Pastoral and Parish Council evaluations, incorporate new goals into strategic plan.

Support parish life by attendance at parish functions.

Education, Certification And/or Experience

Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Music or equivalent

Previous employment as part or full-time Director of Music Ministries preferred.

Experience as a part-time or volunteer musician may be considered. Fluency in Spanish a must.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid FL driver license and automobile insurance

Other Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes

Knowledge of basic tenets of Catholic Church, hierarchical structure and entities.

Proficiency in MS Outlook, including calendar function. Basic word processing skills in MS Word.

Good computer literacy, including ability to navigate search engines effectively in order to locate information for singers.

Must learn and familiarize self with Diocesan Office of Liturgy and Web site.

The ability to interact and maintain a positive working relationship with other musicians and volunteer choir members of all levels.

The ability to handle difficult people and stressful situations in a calm, respectful manner.

Type at least 35 wpm with 90% accuracy.

Good verbal and written skills in English and Spanish.

Excellent customer service skills, including ability to maintain focus on and professionalism with people in challenging situations, both in person and by phone.

Must be able to multi-task and retain accuracy in an environment of fielding simultaneous callers and visitors.

Must be supportive of the mission and tenets of the Roman Catholic Church.

Must have a professional demeanor.

Ability to work effectively with Diocesan employees, departments heads, representatives of other agencies and the general public.

Adhere to the Diocese of Palm Beach Code of Conduct with emphasis on confidentiality and able to exercise discretion and good business judgment

Pastoral Skills A Director of Music Ministries is a pastoral musician, of service to the church at prayer. He or she “. . is not merely an employee or volunteer, but a minister, someone who shares faith, serves the community, and expresses the love of God and neighbor through music.”

The ability to interact with all Priests-Celebrants, choir members, parishioners, parish staff and other musicians;

The ability to empower the people to sing; rehearse continuously until they feel comfortable

The ability to engage the parish in the musical celebration of faith at worship;

Attends to the musical and spiritual growth of parish music volunteers;

Provides appropriate training for cantors, organists and members of musical ensembles;

The ability to actively recruit and retain singers and musicians.

Liturgical Skills A Director of Music Ministries has acquired basic information about the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church and is able to integrate this with musical skills so that the liturgical music component of worship can be celebrated. Such basic information is usually acquired through the study of liturgical theology and church music or through wide reading or experience in the field.

Understands the place of the assembly as the primary liturgical symbol;

Is capable of preparing for great feasts and seasons of the Church;

Is capable of preparing for Sundays of Ordinary Time;

Is capable of preparing for sacraments;

Is capable of preparing for celebrations with children.

Musical Skills A Director of Music Ministries has attained skills in applied music, music theory, and the history of music, usually through an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in music.

Has acquired a thorough understanding of applied music, music theory and the history of music, most often achieved through an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in music;

Has performance proficiency in a keyboard instrument used in liturgical celebration and voice/choral performance experience.

Knowledge of keyboard technique, liturgical service-playing techniques, group vocal techniques and choral conducting;

Some understanding of acoustics, especially pertaining to the parish worship space;

Basic knowledge of theory and harmony

Ability to write simple musical scores, (auxiliary instrumental parts, descants, etc.);

Understanding of score reading and transposition of instruments;

Awareness of the vast repertoire of music available today, both contemporary and treasured, sacred pieces;

Sensitivity to the ethnic composition of the parish and its musical needs.

Organizational Skills The position of Director of Music Ministries implies the involvement of other people in the musical programs of the parish. The Director must be able to organize or see to the organization of all aspects of the parish music program.

Overall coordination of the various music ministries;

Music budget administration;

Long and short-range planning of music;

Scheduling of music ministers;

Timely distribution of all schedules so that musicians have adequate rehearsal time;

Overseeing the maintenance of instruments.

Physical Requirements This job normally requires the physical demands of standing for long periods of time, with arms elevated and away from the body for the purpose of choral direction. Additionally, walking, bending, lifting or performing other work requiring low physical exertion is also expected. Speaking, hearing and adequate vision as well as typing on a regular basis are also necessary to successful job performance.
