Magic: the Gathering is hiring a new
Art Director
to help create incredible new worlds and work with fantasy illustrators to make every Magic card worthy of an award. Are you a curious, highly engaged, and experienced visual creative who is immersed in fantasy art and passionate about artist relationships? If so, please apply today!
What you0ll do
Commission a high volume of artwork: identifying freelance illustrators for each piece, providing continuous direction on individual pieces, and maintaining solid relationships with those partners.
Research and understand Magic IP and translate visual targets and art briefs into clear direction to guide artists to success.
Lead in-house and external illustrators in crafting concept art assets.
Present creative artistic direction and provide constructive feedback in meetings and stand-up critiques.
Review print-ready files to ensure final card quality.
Participate in brainstorms on future Magic creative expressions and workflow/process improvements in partnership with department leaders.
What you9ll bring
2+ yrs commercial art illustration and/or commissioning Art Director experience.
Understanding of Magic as both a game and a brand.
Strong communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and comfortable giving and receiving feedback.
Ability to demonstrate ownership over commissioned work and concept art, and to synthesize game mechanics, brand knowledge, and creative goals into clear and concise direction.
A portfolio demonstrating strong creative vision.
You keep current with fantasy illustration market/talent and have an interest in discovering diverse, emerging artists.
Ability to operate with diplomacy and communicate with respect while collaborating with external partners/approvers.
Previous professional world building experience is a plus.
Adept in Adobe Photoshop, proficient in Illustrator, InDesign, and MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook).

Compensation and Benefits The hourly rate for this position is $111,900.00 to $167,800.00. The hiring range will vary based on factors such as experience, skills, location and market conditions. Additionally, employees may be eligible for annual and long-term incentives as part of their overall compensation package.
