Hybrid Role – Tues. & Thurs. in Novato Role: Assignment Role, Employee Relations, People Function
Reporting to the Vice President, People, Technical Operations & Corporate Groups The Employee Relations Director is responsible for execution of the Employee Relations Strategy across BioMarin, including Technical Operations, Research & Development, Commercial and Corporate Functions. The role is responsible for providing strategic and operational guidance on enterprise‑wide employee relations activities, policies, processes, and procedures pertaining to the BioMarin US locations. This position will command employee relations expertise, excellent judgment, and highly developed analytical, interpersonal, problem‑solving and communication skills. This position will support business leaders to handle workplace concerns and co‑create action plans and provide intervention as necessary. The role will work extensively with business leaders to identify opportunities to address repeating employee relations issues proactively and preventatively, and will provide guidance and coaching to managers of all levels to address behavioural and performance areas. The Employee Relations director will stay attuned to organizational and operational changes across BioMarin locations in the US to identify potential employee relations risks and develop plans to address proactively.
Responsibilities
Oversee the management of the employee relations processes and procedures to enable effective conflict resolution and problem solving.
Conduct, oversee, and assist employee relation issues to manage employee concerns and grievances and identify and implement appropriate action and accountability practices.
Identify a fair and inclusive process appropriate for employee concerns or grievances, including leading a fact‑finding investigation to ensure adherence to BioMarin’s employee relations policies and practices.
Stay attuned to organizational and operational changes to identify potential employee relations risks and develop proactive plans to address them.
Provide guidance and coaching to managers of all levels to address employee behaviour and performance.
Assist with the development and delivery of appropriate performance feedback or action plans, including corrective/disciplinary actions.
Oversee effective documentation techniques and maintain accurate, confidential records regarding all reported matters and fact‑finding documentation.
Interpret and apply understanding of employee policies and practices, employment law, and other regulations to provide guidance or clarification on employee relations matters.
Maintain the highest level of integrity when managing employee relations issues and reported matters.
Have experience with alternative dispute resolution, specifically workplace mediation.
Collaborate with Legal, Compliance and Payroll teams to develop support for the business.
Provide guidance aligned with supporting leaders to handle investigations, disciplinaries, grievances, performance management issues, and sickness sensitively in line with policy principles.
Contribute to the continual development of employment‑related people policies and procedures.
Support training initiatives and the continual development of management toolkits for leaders.
Proactively enable leaders to manage people issues promptly using best‑practice approaches and people‑policy principles.
Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of employment case law and legislative changes and apply this knowledge effectively.
Ensure employee relations cases are recorded, tracked, and proactively managed to conclusion or hand‑off to the relevant Strategic Business Partner.
Requirements
10 years of experience working in the Employee Relations field.
Strong analytical, interpersonal, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
Ability to work in a dynamic and agile environment.
Strong strategic, negotiation, and diplomacy skills.
Strong understanding of state and federal US laws concerning labor relations.
Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply appropriate sections of applicable laws, guidelines, regulations, and policies.
Exceptional interpersonal skills.
Strong understanding of dispute resolution and compensation administration.
Ability to remain tactful, calm, and persuasive in controversial and/or confrontational situations.
Excellent writing and language skills.

Compensation In the U.S., the salary range for this position is $76 to $100 per hour. The base pay will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock‑based long‑term incentives, paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company‑sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans.
