The Sterile Processing Director is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, and management of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD). This role ensures that all surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies are processed, sterilized, and distributed according to regulatory standards, hospital policies, and industry best practices. The Director collaborates with perioperative services, infection control, and other departments to support safe, efficient patient care.
Overview The Sterile Processing Director leads the SPD to ensure compliant processing, sterilization, and distribution of instruments, equipment, and supplies in support of safe patient care and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
Provide leadership, strategic direction, and management of the Sterile Processing Department.
Ensure processing, sterilization, and distribution activities meet regulatory standards, hospital policies, and industry best practices.
Collaborate with perioperative services, infection control, and other departments to support safe, efficient patient care.
Education and Work Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, Nursing, or related field (Master’s preferred).
Minimum of 7–10 years of sterile processing experience, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership role.
Strong knowledge of sterilization science, infection prevention, and regulatory standards.
Proven ability to manage budgets, staffing, and operations in a healthcare environment.
Excellent communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.
Licensures, Registrations, Certifications
CRCST – HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution).
Physical Requirements Physical Requirements: 1) (C) Continuous – 6-8 hours per shift; 2) (F) Frequent – 2-6 hours per shift; 3) (I) Infrequent – 0-2 hours per shift. Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking; climb stairs; work indoors/outdoors; reach in all directions; lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted (and related lifting requirements described in the original text). The ability to perform gross and fine motor movements, tactile tasks, and occasional respirator use as required. The position may require work in rotating shifts and overtime as needed.
