Duties & Responsibilities:
The VCU School of Nursing seeks an insightful, creative, and productive Scientific Writer for an hourly position. The role will support efforts of faculty and students in research development, grant writing, and knowledge dissemination. The ideal candidate will be experienced in writing for scientific audiences, with demonstrated knowledge that complements existing areas of research in focus at the School of Nursing https://nursing.vcu.edu/research/faculty-research-and-scholarship-interests/. Key responsibilities will be to provide support in scientific writing for grants, publications, and similar; editing; basic data analysis; and other relevant supportive activities that elevate the research of School of Nursing faculty. The candidate will be committed to supporting the mission of the School of Nursing - to champion health and well-being through the power of nursing education, discovery, and practice.
Scientific Writing and Editing (75%)
Assist with preparing high‑quality grant proposals to diverse funding agencies (e.g., federal agencies, foundations), including drafting and editing main documents and supplementary materials
Assist with preparing data‑driven study reports
Assist with manuscript preparation, submissions, and revisions with thoughtful responses to reviewers
Other Scholarship Activities (20%)
Collaborate with SON data team and assist with basic data analyses for scientific reports, publications, and grant applications
Handle confidential research data with highest level of integrity
Assist with diverse aspects of scholarly activities, ranging from identifying relevant funding opportunities to assisting faculty with IRB submissions
Assist with Office of Research activities for the Internal Grants Program, PREP group, and other similar resources that support faculty and student scholarship
Attend School of Nursing monthly Research Council meetings and/or other research‑related meetings as requested
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
Maintain required trainings relating to research/ scholarship (e.g., CITI, relevant VCU required trainings)
Uphold VCU and School of Nursing policies and procedures and help faculty and students to do so
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in a scientific or healthcare field or equivalent combination of education and experience
Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in research areas that complement the areas of emphasis within the School of Nursing https://nursing.vcu.edu/research/faculty-research-and-scholarship-interests/
Demonstrated experience in writing scientific grant proposals to external funding agencies (e.g., federal, foundations)
Demonstrated experience and competency with technical, scientific, or medical writing, including grant applications and scientific publications and research conference presentations
Experience with statistical software (e.g., R, SPSS, SAS) and data collection technologies (e.g., REDCap)
Excellent judgment and discretion regarding confidential information
Experience serving as a peer‑reviewer of research (e.g., peer‑reviewed journal reviewer, conference abstract reviewer, grant review committee)
Excellent organization, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills
Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Adobe Acrobat
Demonstrated commitment to the VCU School of Nursing’s mission and vision
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in a scientific or healthcare field
Success in achieving external grant funding as an individual or as part of a team
Demonstrated effectiveness in managing projects (e.g., gather timely information, write effectively and efficiently on deadline, secure appropriate approvals)
Experience working with interprofessional teams
Demonstrated experience analyzing and interpreting biobehavioral data, as evidenced by a history of data‑based publications about biobehavioral research/ outcomes in areas that complement those within the School of Nursing
Salary Range:
Commensurate with experience starting at $36/hour
