Overview
The Technical Writer develops, updates, and manages highly technical documentation that will support the DHS C-UAS mission, including manuals, reports, workflow instructions, drill templates, SOPs, installation guides, and administrative publications.
Role Impact
This role supports DHS's ability to test, evaluate, deploy, and scale C-UAS technologies across Components protecting national security, critical infrastructure, and major events. Clear and accurate documentation enhances operator readiness, improves interagency coordination, and enables successful technology adoption.

Annapolis, MD
Salary Range:
$129,000 - $136,000
Key Responsibilities Write, update, and manage technical materials such as reports, manuals, T&E summaries, installation, operation, and maintenance guides, and SOPs. Interpret assignment scope and technical requirements from program leadership. Study exercise planning and operational C-UAS activities to accurately document workflows and technologies. Translate complex technical concepts into accurate, comprehensible documents. Organize material following program standards for clarity, accuracy, and consistency. Recommend improvements to content structure, formatting, and delivery methods. Select or coordinate photographs, diagrams, charts, and schematics to support material. Collaborate with illustrators or graphic designers for technical visuals. Maintain document repositories, version logs, and archives. Conduct quality reviews and coordinate SME validation. Assist in layout, formatting, printing, duplication, and digital distribution. Support speeches, articles, and public communications. Support meeting documentation development by producing presentation materials. Assist with the development of training materials. Minimum Qualifications
Must be a U.S citizen with a valid secret security clearance. Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Communications, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field. 6-10+ years of technical writing experience for engineering, defense, cybersecurity, or federal programs. Experience with DHS, DoD, or federal programs. Ability to interpret technical drawings, system specs, workflows, and procedures. Working knowledge of Section 508 compliance. Proficiency with documentation tools, including MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position.

At Fairwinds, we consider many factors when it comes to compensation, including the scope of the position as well as your background and experience. Base pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location and experience. Additional incentives may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.

Must be eligible to work in the US.
Must have an active Government security clearance of at least the Secret level.
