Position Title: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR / FACULTY & STAFF EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

Overview The College of Medicine’s (CMED) executive director for faculty and staff employment services is a highly visible executive/leadership role responsible for coordinating and facilitating faculty affairs and human resource activities for CMED in collaboration with CMU’s Human Resources and Faculty Personnel Services offices. The executive director provides leadership and guidance regarding faculty and staff human resource matters and faculty affairs within CMED to ensure adherence with evolving accrediting and licensing bodies, federal and state law where appropriate, and CMU policies and practices. The position is responsible for interpreting rules and regulations, often applying sound judgment without the benefit of specific policy or precedent. These services relate to a broad spectrum of employees including tenured, tenure track and non-tenure track faculty, volunteer faculty, external partner faculty, professional and administrative staff, union employees, student employees, graduate assistants, and post-doctoral scholars. The executive director exercises direct supervision of a team of professional and administrative and office support personnel in CMED’s Faculty and Staff Services Office. The executive director also provides oversight and implementation of policies, processes, and procedures associated with the academic appointment, reappointment, promotion, and tenure of medical faculty, associated professional staff members, community educators, CMU Medical Education Partners faculty, and other external partner faculty appointments.

Responsibilities

Provides direct supervision and management of the College of Medicine Faculty and Staff Services (CMED F&S) office, including coaching, mentoring, and performance management of staff; ensures appropriate staffing and workflow; maintains effective, compliant, and client-responsive processes and procedures.

Serves as a subject matter expert and consultant to managers and executive leadership in CMED regarding faculty appointment, reappointment, promotion, and tenure of medical faculty and appointment/reappointment of community educators and external partner faculty; collaborates with the Human Resources Department/Faculty Personnel Services to implement and interpret CMU HR policies and practices.

Oversees and improves CMED’s faculty and staff onboarding, orientation, and appointment/reappointment processes.

Provides consultation and best practice recommendations to the advancement committee, the dean, and others regarding appointment, reappointment, promotion, tenure, post-tenure review, and faculty evaluations.

Updates CMED’s faculty handbook and manual to include new and revised processes for faculty appointment, reappointment, promotion and advancement, and tenure.

Maintains a database and personnel files of all faculty appointed within CMED.

Addresses employee relations issues and concerns within CMED and partners with CMU’s HR, Faculty Personnel Services, and Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity to resolve issues in line with CMU policies, practices, and collective bargaining agreements.

Oversees HIPAA workforce training and compliance with CMU HIPAA policies in CMU clinics.

Develops and maintains the Department of Faculty and Staff Services budget.

Promotes a welcoming and considerate community; oversees staff professional development and employee recognition programs.

Performs other professional duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, management, or related field.

Eight years of professional-level faculty or staff services experience.

Prior supervisory and management-level experience.

Demonstrated ability to deliver a broad array of employment type services in a complex organization such as a college of medicine, university, or health care system.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of a large, complex organization; strong advocate and leader in process improvement related to faculty and staff service delivery.

Outstanding verbal and written communications skills.

Demonstrated team-oriented leadership style.

Ability to perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree or relevant professional certification (e.g., SPHR, PHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP).

Experience in a higher education, governmental, or nonprofit setting.

Experience in a health affairs setting.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provides direct supervision and management of the CMED Faculty and Staff Services office, including coaching, mentoring, and performance management of staff, ensuring proper staffing and workflow, and maintaining effective, compliant processes responsive to clients.

Oversees onboarding, orientation, and appointment/reappointment processes for CMED staff and faculty.

Provides consultation and best practice recommendations regarding appointment, reappointment, promotion, tenure, post-tenure review, and faculty evaluations.

Updates CMED’s faculty handbook and related manuals for processes related to appointments, promotions, and tenure.

Maintains CMED’s faculty and staff personnel files and related databases.

Addresses employee relations issues in CMED and coordinates with CMU HR, Faculty Personnel Services, and Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity to resolve issues per CMU policies and agreements.

Oversees HIPAA workforce training and compliance in collaboration with CMU’s HIPAA Privacy Officer.

Develops and manages the Department of Faculty and Staff Services budget.

Promotes a welcoming and respectful community; supports staff development and recognition programs.

Performs other professional duties as assigned.
