TwoYear Full-Time Appointment
Position Summary The Birmingham Boys Choir (BBC) is seeking a highly motivated and musically gifted Associate Music Director to join its artistic and educational team. This twoyear, fulltime position is designed to prepare and develop a future Music Director for the organization. Working closely with the current Music Director, the Associate Music Director will contribute to all aspects of the choir’s instruction, performance, recruitment, and community engagement. The role combines teaching, conducting, program development, and organizational leadership in support of the BBC’s mission and its long-standing artistic tradition.
Reports To Music Director, Birmingham Boys Choir
Position Term This is a twoyear appointment. The position is intended as a developmental role and will conclude at the end of the twoyear term.
Primary Responsibilities Instruction & Conducting
Teach and conduct the Junior Choir, including vocal instruction, and ensemble development.
Teach and conduct the SA and TB ensembles.
Assist the Music Director in rehearsals, sectional work, and concert preparation.
Support curriculum development and contribute to future music arrangements and repertoire planning.
Recruitment & Community Engagement
Recruit new boys into the Birmingham Boys Choir from schools, churches, and community organizations in the surrounding region.
Build and maintain relationships with educators, arts organizations, and community partners.
Represent the BBC at community events, musical gatherings, and outreach activities.
Performance & Event Support
Attend all choir events, concerts, tours, and rehearsals as directed.
Assist with conducting performances and supporting logistical and musical needs for events.
Contribute to the artistic planning and execution of seasonal concerts, special events, and public appearances.
Organizational Support
Participate in board meetings as requested.
Assist with fundraising efforts, donor development activities, and special initiatives.
Learn and support the organizational operations, traditions, and history of the Birmingham Boys Choir.
Offer creative input to help shape the future direction, vision, and artistic leadership of the BBC.
Qualifications Required Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, Choral Conducting, or a related field Demonstrated experience working with children’s or youth choirs Strong conducting, vocal pedagogy, and music theory skills Strong communication and interpersonal skills A passion for music education and youth development Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required by choir events
Preferred Master’s degree in Choral Conducting or Music Education Experience with boys’ choirs or treble choirs Compositional or arranging experience Experience in recruitment, community outreach, or fundraising Familiarity with nonprofit organizations or arts administration
